Southern Utah University in the city of Cedar City was founded in 1897 as a regular school and received official university status in 1991. Southern Utah University is a friendly campus community where students explore their interests and prepare for careers and meaningful life experiences. It offers world-class project-based learning opportunities where students gain work experience before entering the job market. President Benson ended his term at the university and was succeeded by Scott L. Wyatt in November 2013. Between 2013 and 2014, Wyatt ran an unprecedented funding campaign, culminating in the opening of the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Centre for the Arts in March 2014. He would also introduce a three-year undergraduate degree program in 2020. It is affiliated with NCAA Division I FCS - Western Athletic Conference. It is ranked at #67 in Regional Universities West, at #83 in Top Performers on Social Mobility and at #32 in Top Public Schools.
