History, Affiliations and Rankings
Established in 1957, Oakland University by Alfred and Matilda Dodge Wilson with the mission to establish a satellite school in Oakland. The university is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity. Currently, the institute is recognized as a student-centered research institute, and it has global recognition. The university is situated in the heart of Oakland County and it is the center of attraction for higher education for both domestic and international students. It is a public institution that offers a distinct educational platform for students to engage in education and research. The university provides flexible classroom programs, technology-driven learning, and research opportunities. Oakland University is the only institute among the 186 business schools to have AACSB international accreditation for accounting and business courses.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The Oakland University campus is located north of Detroit at the center of Oakland County and spreads across an area of 1433 acres. The campus has about 50 major buildings that include seven accommodation halls, two complexes, an athletic arena, a state-of-the-art recreation center, OU Art Gallery, Meadow Brook Theater, Meadow Brook Hall, and Amphitheater. It also includes trails and biking paths and two nationally ranked golf courses. The Rochester area at the Oakland University was ranked #39 in the CNN/Money Magazine list of the Top 100 American cities in which to live in 2005.
Currently, Oakland University provides 146 undergraduate degree programs and 130 postgraduate, doctoral, and certificate programs. The university comprises of the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration, the School of Education and Human Services, the School of Engineering and Computer Science, the School of Health Sciences, School of Nursing, and the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Oakland University also offers various study abroad programs.
