About the University

History, Affiliations and Rankings

The National College of Ireland was founded in Sandford Lodge, Ranelagh, in 1951 as the Catholic Workers College in Dublin. It was founded by Fr. Edward Coyne S.J. in collaboration with trade unionists like Walter Beirne and other early members of the institution were Professor Thomas A. Finlay S.J. and Rev. Edmund Kent S.J. A number of the college's programs were recognized by the state's National Council for Educational Awards (NCEA) in 1976. In 1998, the National College of Ireland (NCI) was rebranded as the National College of Ireland (NCI), with a larger National Campus Network and a variety of outreach programmes around the nation. Earlier, it was affiliated with Jesuits (1951-1998) and NCEA (1976-2001) and at present, it is affiliated with HETAC. NCI offers academic programs from Foundation to Ph.D. under the National Framework of Qualifications. Webometrics has placed it at #3821 in the world.
