The roots of the Mahidol university can be traced back to the founding of the Siriraj Hospital established in the year 1888 by his Majesty King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The medical school associated with this hospital was awarded its first degree in the year 1893. The Mahidol University is also the first university that taught the first international bachelor’s degree programme of Thailand. It is also the oldest higher education learning seat in the country. It became University of Medical Science in the year 1943 and finally was given the Mahidol University name and status in 1969 to honor his royal highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla, who was famous as “Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health” of Thailand. The university has 3 campuses, 2 smaller inner-city bases and provincial campuses across Charoen, Nakhon Sawan and Kanchanaburi provinces. The Salaya campus situated in Nakhon Pathom is the biggest campus of the university. The university is a National Research University Initiative and Research Promotion program member. This was decreed in the year 2009 at the Ministry of Education by the Office of Higher Education Commission.
