History, Affiliations and Rankings
London Metropolitan University was founded in 2002 in London, UK with the merger of London Guildhall University and the University of North London. The roots of the institution date back to the 19th century, beginning with the founding of the Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men in 1848. This study group of a few students later became the City of London College and then the City of London Polytechnic. In 1992, it was awarded university status and was named London Guildhall University. The university decided to increase its campus as the number of students increased as time passed and was later named London Metropolitan University. The university is associated with the International Association of Aviation Personnel Schools, Universities UK, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and EUA. London Metropolitan University is ranked between #801-1000 in QS World University Rankings 2022. Having said that, the university is also ranked #119 in the Complete University Guide's University League Tables 2022 and #87 in the Guardian's Best UK Universities 2022 - rankings.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
London Metropolitan University has 2 campuses. The university's main campus is located on Holloway Road, around the corner from the famous Emirates Stadium, home to Arsenal FC, and a few minutes away from central London by tube. Five out of the six schools are located on the main campus, that are - School of Business & Law, School of Human Sciences, School of Computing & Digital Media, School of Social Professions and School of Social Sciences. The other campus of London Met is situated in Aldgate. It is home to the School of Art, Architecture and Design and is located in trendy east London's heart of the creative community. There are 9,400 undergraduate students and 2,745 postgraduate students in the university. London Met's library is also accessible to the graduates who have this card. Along with this, many other services of the university can be used by the graduates as long as they have a prior appointment.
Accomplishments and Alumni
London Metropolitan is dedicated to decreasing its environmental impact and utilising resources in a conscientious and environmentally sustainable manner. The university owns major environmental accomplishments to date, which include a 66% reduction in carbon footprint from a 2009 baseline figure in 2016/17 and hitting its 2020 target four years early. As a result, London Metropolitan University has received numerous renowned awards. London Metropolitan University's alumni association comprises more than 180,000 graduates. The university offers various services to its recent alumni members such as Alumni Card through which you can attend any university event or lectures that are open to the public. In addition, Helen Baker (Author), Noel Clarke (Director, actor, and screenwriter), Alannah Curie (Artist), Tom McRae (Vocalist & songwriter), Vic Reeves (Comedian), Matthew Sweeney (Famous poet), Alison Moet (Pop singer), and Edwin Smith (Famous photographer) are among the prominent graduates.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
London Metropolitan University has a varied student body, with over 145 countries represented among students, professors, and staff. Athena SWAN is a non-profit organisation that promotes gender equality. The Bronze Level Award Application for London Met was submitted to Advance HE at the end of May 2021, and the institution was successfully recognised in September 2021. The institution is also a member of Stonewall's Diversity Champions programme and has participated in the Workplace Equality Index in order to develop and implement LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices throughout campus. This has provided it with a plan of action to follow. The university is further equipped with a Career and Employability team that helps students with the necessary skills, experience and knowledge to make the right decision when it comes to pursuing a job. Services of this group are available to students on-board and recent graduates for up to 3 years.
