Johannes Gutenberg University of Mains is a prominent and prestigious German university which is an active member of the German U15, a coalition of 15 major research-intensive and leading medical universities in Germany. With the aim to promote tradition and progress, it is known as one of the largest universities in Germany. The university was established in 1477 as University of Mainz and later in 1946, it re-opened as Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. JGU has more than 10 faculties that offer programs in a wide range of disciplines such as Social Sciences, Media, Sports, Law, Management, Economics, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Geosciences, Biology, Philosophy, Philology, History along Catholic Theology and Protestant Theology.
Interestingly, the university has integrated the School of Music and the Academy of Fine Arts with an aim to promote Music and Art education as well as to encourage artists in both these fields. Another feature component is the university has formed the Faculty of Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies in Germersheim to train translators and interpreters in a range of European and non-European languages.
Johannes Gutenberg University of Mains is home to over 500 professors and comprises of 11 departments. Other than this, the infrastructure includes an electron accelerator, a research reactor TRIGA, medical and science centres, a botanical garden, an indoor swimming pool and a sports stadium situated within the campus.
