The Hiroshima University was established in its present form in the year 1949, even though some of the constituent institutions date back to earlier times. The university was established as part of the Japanese education reorganization, as an aftermath of World War II. This was done as a part of establishing a single national university in almost all of the 47 administrative divisions of the country. Hiroshima Higher Normal School which was set up in 1902, a university which focuses on science and literature, one of the two national training centers for the teachers of middle-schools and a technical college which has good relations with the Japanese industry are all part of, as pre-existing notable parts of the universities. The postgraduate provision as well as medical school was added to the university in 1953. The different programs and courses are offered in disciplines such as:
