History, Affiliations and Rankings
As the first private, nonprofit university in Turkey, Bilkent University was established in 1984, with the fundamental aim of creating a centre of excellence in higher education and research. This goal is exemplified by the name "Bilkent," which is an abbreviation for "Bilim kenti," which means "city of learning and science" in Turkish. The goal was to become a hub for superior research and higher education. The first students were admitted to Bilkent University in 1986. There were 386 graduate and undergraduate students in that year. There are currently more than 12,000 students enrolled in ten faculties and three graduate programmes. They include exchange and international students from 60 different nations. It is accredited by the AACSB Accreditation of Faculty of Business Administration. It is placed at #551-600 by the QS World University Ranking 2022 and at #601-800 by THE (Times Higher Education) University Ranking in 2022.

The university serves as a nexus of intellectual, social, and cultural activity and is situated in Ankara, the capital and largest city of the nation with a population of 5 million. With a 300-hectare campus services and facilities at Bilkent University are available to students. There are 2 professional schools, 9 faculties, and 13,000 students overall. There are nine major faculties at Bilkent University, and students can choose from courses in economics, architecture, management, political science and public administration, teaching English as a foreign language, electrical and electronic engineering, translation and interpretation, mathematics, the performing arts, and archaeology, among other subjects.

In terms of the number of papers produced per faculty member, Bilkent is ranked highly both domestically and internationally by ISI Citation Indexes. The university was ranked as one of Turkey's top three universities. US News & World Report - Global Universities has ranked it at 643 places in 2022. Bilkent continues to draw many of Turkey's brightest students thanks to its faculty of internationally known researchers and first-rate facilities, and it is proud of its 55,000 graduates who are pursuing prosperous careers on five continents. Some of the famous notable alumni are Nasuh Mahruki (Mountaineer), Erdem Basci (Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey), Emrah Yucel (President of the Turkish Film Festival), and Gizem Girismen (Gold Medallist at the 2008 Summer Paralympics), etc.

Nearly 12,000 students attend the university and are enrolled in 59 graduate and 29 undergraduate programmes. International and exchange students from 59 nations make up an increasing portion of the full-time student body. The male-to-female ratio is 56:44.
