History, Affiliations and Rankings

The University of Bahrain was established in 1986. It is the largest public university in the kingdom of Bahrain. The university was established after the merger of two public colleges Gulf College of Technology and the University College of Science, Arts and Education. The vision is to become a world-class university recognized as an institute for teaching, research and entrepreneurship. The mission of the university is to contribute directly to Bahrain's economic growth and development, supported by excellence in education, technology and research with a regional impact. It is affiliated with FUIW. It is ranked at #801-1000 in QS World University Rankings and at #33 in Arab Region Rankings.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The university has three campuses. The main campus at Sakhir houses all faculties except for the faculties of Health Sciences and Engineering. The Faculty of Health Sciences is adjacent to the Salmaniya Medical Complex. The Faculty of Engineering is adjacent to Bahrain Polytechnic. The university has a total of 66 buildings, 240 classrooms, 183 laboratories and three gyms. The university has four libraries, with the central library stocking around 250,000 books. The library also has access to the British Library database. The courses imparted at the university are carried out through 9 colleges namely the College of Information Technology, College of Arts, College of Business Administration, College of Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Law, Bahrain Teachers College, College of Applied Studies and the College of Health and Sport Sciences. These colleges offer a wide range of bachelor's, master's, Doctorate degree programs and Associate Diploma courses. Some of the courses offered at the university are Electronic Engineering, Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Accounting, Banking and Finance, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Network Engineering, Tourism, Mass Communication, and Computer Science.

Accomplishments and Alumni

The university is a member of the International Association of Universities and the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation. Since 1986, the university's academics have published more than 5,000 research papers and books, 80% of which have been produced by the Colleges of Science and Engineering respectively. Since the university was founded, more than 500 master theses have been published. Some of the notable alumni are Salman Bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa (President of the Asian Football Confederation), Mohamed Ali Hasan Ali (Member of the Consultative Council), and Muna Al Hashemi (Bahraini businesswoman). 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

There are 30,317 students along with 761 academic staff and 1,535 administrative staff. The Bahrain University has 9 centres of excellence with its policy of internationalization ensuring that it receives students on campus from over 30 countries. In addition to this, the university also has foreign exchange program partnerships with various global institutes and has a number of international centres for, Chinese, French, English, Japanese, German and American studies.
