- Indus River System: The Indus River flows mainly through Pakistan, but it starts in Tibet and passes through parts of India like Jammu and Kashmir. Important rivers in this system include the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej.
- Ganga River System: The Ganga is one of the most important rivers in India. It flows through northern India and into Bangladesh. It includes rivers like the Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gandak, and Kosi.
The city, which is located on the water divide between the Indus and the Ganga River Systems, is Ambala. Ambala is a city in the state of Haryana and is situated on a ridge or slightly higher land. This ridge acts as the dividing line between the two big river systems, Indus and Ganga.
So, when it rains near Ambala, some rainwater flows westward into rivers like the Sutlej (part of the Indus system), and some rainwater flows eastward into rivers like the Yamuna (part of the Ganga system). This means Ambala sits right in the middle, helping to divide the rainwater between two of the biggest river systems in South Asia.
