The government of the UK has pledged financial support for all healthcare students. The support will ensure less financial pressure on students so that they choose medical courses that could benefit NHS in the UK. All the changes in the support scheme are under implementation from the 1st of September 2023.
The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan introduced all of this, incorporating improved education and training for students. Students in nursing, midwifery, allied health professions, and medical and dental courses will receive these benefits.
Read about the detailed benefits entailed in this initiative below.
How Has the Government Made Healthcare Studies Affordable?
To start with, the travel and accommodation support for the healthcare students has been increased by 50%. The government also declared its support for more students from low-income families.
Additionally, the government has increased the income threshold for parental or guardian earnings that qualify students for support from £24,279 to £26,076. On top of that, the minister of state health said that they will ensure a diverse range of students in this field which further improves chances for international students.
The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan has made all these changes possible. Furthermore, a funding of over £2.4 billion backs this plan. Also, it will continue for the next 5 years as Healthcare is in the top 5 priorities of the government during this time.
The idea is to train more staff exceptionally as well as retain them as professionals for the country. Furthermore, the training places for undergraduate medical schools are planned to double up to 15,000 a year by 2031.
The government with the General Medical Council will also create new medical schools to incorporate the trainees. For now, schools will prioritize healthcare areas with a shortage of professionals.
All in all, the government and NHS have a major and long-term plan for the expansion of Healthcare and international students can also benefit from it. If you want to read more such exciting information, make sure you follow Leverage Edu News Updates.
