Study in Taiwan: President Tsai Ing-wen Announced 10,000 Scholarships to International Students

On July 4, 2023 President Tsai Ing -Wen (蔡英文) announced scholarships to International students.
The government will provide 10,000 scholarships for a duration of 4 years to international students who commit to remaining in Taiwan for work.

The aim of the scholarships is to reduce the shortage of skilled workers. According to Tsai, the government wants to secure ‘quality and quantity’ when attracting international students. 

For this purpose, Taiwan has established 6 additional departments at Universities in Taiwan. These departments would focus on imparting education in semiconductor technology and other key industries. 

Reasons for Granting Scholarships to International Students 

On Wednesday, Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung announced that inter-ministerial cooperation introduced this policy.The aim is to address the declining birth rate in Taiwan and meet the needs of the industry. 

Consequently, retaining international talents after graduation is the key focus of the plan. The government aims to retain international students after they have completed their education from Taiwaneese educational institutions. Therefore, Pen encouraged the business community to allocate more resources to international talent acquisition.

When will the Scholarships be Available?

Pen Wen-chung stated that the scholarship policy are yet to be decided.However, the scholarships would be available to international students starting from 2024.

Hence, International students wanting to study and work in Taiwan can apply for the scholarships from the beginning of next year.
