Japan offers MEXT scholarships to international students. The scholarship aims to accept excellent human resources from foreign countries such as India to Japan to strengthen the educational and research capacity of universities in Japan. Currently, the MEXT scholarship applications are open to the following students.

• Undergraduate students: Undergraduate level of studies leading to a bachelor’s degree 
• College of Technology Students -undergraduate level study Associate Degree (Diploma)
• Specialized Training College Students- Undergraduate level leading to Certificate

The MEXT scholarship fully funds all the main expenses of the student. Under each category, 12 scholarships are available. The scholarship application period will close between 17 April and 27 May 2024. Therefore, you need to apply as soon as possible.

MEXT Scholarship Eligibility Criteria 

MEXT scholarship’s basic eligibility requirements are as follows. 

• Undergraduate students: Students enrolling in a Social Sciences, Humanities, and Natural Sciences department are eligible. However, they must have obtained at least 80% marks in 12th (or 11th or 10th) grade. Those who are proficient in Japanese will get the preference.
• College of Technology Students: Must have acquired a minimum of 5% marks at 12th (or 11th or 10th) grade. Those who are proficient in Japanese will get the preference. Some eligible courses include Mechanical Engineering,  Information, Communication and Network Engineering Maritime Engineering, etc.
• Specialized Training College Students- Must have obtained at least 60% marks in 12th (or 11th or 10th) grade. Those who are proficient in Japanese will get the preference. The eligible courses are Technology, Education and Welfare, Personal Care and Nutrition, Business, Culture and General Education, and Fashion and Home Economics.

In addition to the above requirements, you must have been born on or after 2 April 2000.(This is applicable for all categories).

MEXT Scholarship Benefits 

The benefits of the MEXT scholarship are many. These are provided in detail below:

• Undergraduate students: An allowance of 117,000 yen (Approx. Rs.63,300) per month. The Japanese government will cover your tuition fees and round-trip airfare. The scholarship is given for 4-6 years, depending on your course.
• College of Technology Students:  An allowance of 117,000 yen (Approx. Rs.63,300) per month. Additionally, you do not have to pay the tuition fee. Moreover, your round-trip airfare is free of charge. The scholarship is given from  April 2025 to March 2029.
• Specialized Training College Students: 117,000 Yen/month (Approx. Rs.63,300 per month. Additionally, your tuition fees and your round-trip airfare will be covered. Moreover, the scholarship will be given from April 2025 to March 2028.
