The University of Exeter puts forward its Medicine and Nursing students to gain firsthand experience at the Glastonbury Festival. The students from the University of Exeter have provided medical care to the people who attended the festival as a part of the Festival Medical Services (FMS).
The safety measures for the 191-acre land visited by around 210,000 attendees, were in the hands of these students. For this, proper training was provided to the students beforehand. Moreover, students gained thorough training in treating shock and burns and basic life care support like CPR before the event.
All the students who volunteered to participate were the first responders at the festival. They gained field experience and outshined the crowd with their practical knowledge.
Glastonbury is one of the largest events in the UK. Taking over the Festival Medical Services for the event was a big milestone for the students.
Skills and Learning for Students
Many students admitted that this is a great addition to their degrees and medical qualifications. They enriched their practical experience in dealing with real-life situations. Though the festival conditions kept changing with time.
The students were especially excited about giving emergency care in a challenging environment. They were also enthralled to tend to the fans of music visiting from different parts of the world. Their emergency care skills were at par in dealing with situations.
For those who have an interest in field medicine, this was a golden opportunity. The students understood really well that they might come across anything to deal with at a festival this large.
Cases of emergencies like fractures, sunburn, heatstrokes and small wounds are a common sight at the festival. But having heard of cases like heart attacks at the festival the team was prepared to deal with anything.
Another challenge for the students was the limited equipment. They managed the situation quite well. In deceiving weather, their main focus was to remain clear-headed and look for the best possible way to provide medical care.
Working at the frontlines of the five-day Glastonbury Festival was a thrilling achievement. It was an example of practical learning used by the universities in the UK. This event was just another example in the list of many efforts made by UK universities to give the best experience to their students.
