Study Abroad: Switzerland Bids to Rejoin Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is a group of 61 research-intensive universities across European countries like Germany, France, the UK etc. Switzerland has also bid to rejoin the group. All the partnering universities and different countries see this as an opportunity to strengthen research partnerships. 

Recently, the Swiss Federal Council has approved a draft of the negotiating mandate with the European Union. Moreover, as Switzerland is a research powerhouse, this association will greatly benefit the country and the Horizon group. 

In September, earlier this year, the UK rejoined the group and now there are major chances that Switzerland might as well. Furthermore, all major university groups are associated with this union. This includes the German U15, France’s Udice, the UK’s Russell Group, and Switzerland’s swissuniversities as well as the Chamber of Universities. 

Switzerland is specifically known for its environmental research and sustainable innovation. Hence, its contribution to Horizon Europe will improve the chances of innovation in this direction. As most unis and countries are looking for innovation in similar fields, it has added the point of like-mindedness to the picture.

What is Horizon Europe?

Horizon Europe is the fundamental funding program for research and innovation in Europe. It is a research-based union between various universities in Europe which is applicable for 7 years.  It has succeeded the Horizon 2020 programme.

This group has a budget of €95.5 billion for research and development. Hence, it is responsible for the innovative growth of the European Union and the fulfilment of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. 

Thus, it also boosts universities, employment and quality of education as well as employment in the area. Such programs implemented at the global level can accelerate the technological advancements manifolds.
