Q. Some people think that it is important to use taxpayer money to search for life on other planets. However, others believe that this is a waste of public money because many more important issues require funding on our planet. Discuss both points of view and give your opinion.

Ans: The allocation of public funds is a topic of heated debate. One such issue is the use of taxpayer money for the exploration of life that exists on other planets. While some believe it plays a crucial role in advancing science, I believe it is a wasteful expenditure, especially considering pressing issues on Earth that require funding.

Advocates for space exploration believe that the search for life on other planets is a significant pursuit. They argue that it can lead to groundbreaking discoveries that may reshape our understanding of the universe. Moreover, they believe that many technological advancements resulting from such exploration can have practical applications, indirectly benefiting society. For instance, NASA’s Mars Rover mission aims to determine whether Mars is or can be a habitable world. Additionally, the development of life-support systems for long-duration space travel can lead to improvements in recycling and waste management. Furthermore, the pursuit of life beyond Earth often necessitates the use of advanced telescopes and observation technologies. These tools are essential for astronomers and scientists to study distant planets and detect potential signs of life. Therefore, investing in space exploration not only expands our knowledge of the cosmos but also drives innovation in technology that can have practical applications here on Earth.

However, critics of this viewpoint argue that the allocation of public funds for space exploration is a misuse of resources. They contend that various pressing issues on Earth require immediate attention and funding. These include poverty alleviation, healthcare improvement, education and environmental conservation. For example, according to the World Bank, nearly 9.2% of the population is living in extreme poverty.  Critics argue that the funds used for space exploration could be better utilized to implement poverty reduction strategies, such as improving access to education and creating job opportunities.  In my opinion, while the study of life outside our planet is indeed intriguing, it is important to prioritize the allocation of public funds.

To conclude, while finding life on the planet is exciting, it is imperative to ensure the prudent use of public funds to address the challenges on Earth.
