Estonia Student Visa: An Overview 

As mentioned above, Estonia is a part of the Schengen zone. Therefore, to take up short-term studies apply for a short-stay Schengen visa. This visa is only given for studies less than 90 days in 180 days. However, this is a common visit visa. You can use it for other purposes as well. For example, tourism.

On the other hand, for long-term studies in Estonia, you need to apply for a D visa. The long-stay visa allows you to stay in the country for up to 365 days within 12 months.  This visa also permits you to stay in other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within 180 days.   • A valid travel document (For example, a passport) that is issued within the last 10 years, and contains 2 blank pages. The document must also be valid for 3 months beyond the intended travel duration.
  • A visa application form that is fully completed and signed
  • A passport-sized photograph (size 35×45 mm)
  • Additionally, you must have travel insurance that covers illness/injury for the duration of your stay
  • An offer letter from a university in Estonia. For example, Tallinn University
  • Proof that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the course duration
  • Moreover, at the time of application submission, you must provide biometric information. Usually, 10 fingerprints are taken. Children below the age of 12 and persons for whom it is physically impossible to give the biometric are exempt from this rule.
  • Any other additional documentation requested must also be submitted. After that, the documents will be processed. The Estonia Student Visa Processing Time is 15 days.

Application Process for an Estonia Student Visa 

The application process for an Estonia student visa are as follows:

  • Visit the official website of the Estonia New Delhi Embassy. Only the New Delhi embassy can grant you a D-visa.
  • Next, select ‘general information for long-stay visa application’.
  • Choose the option ‘apply in Embassy’. The page will redirect you to the visa appointment page.
  • You can now book an appointment for your visa application.
  • On the day of the visa appointment visit the embassy in person to start the visa application process
  • Ensure that you are carrying the relevant documentation.
  • You will have to submit the biometric information on this day.
  • The Estonia student visa processing time is 15 days maximum. After 15 days, you will get to know about the status of your visa application

Can I bring my Family on an Estonian Student Visa?

You are not permitted to bring your family on an Estonian student visa. Estonia wants applicants to justify the reason for obtaining a visa. However, if your family member wants to meet you they can visit the country on a visit visa. You can settle with your family member (who is already in Estonia) only after you have received a temporary residence permit. The processing time of the residence permit is the same as the Estonian student visa processing time.

What is the Minimum Bank Balance for an Estonia student visa?

The minimum bank balance required for studies is 4 times the subsistence level established (as per subsection 3 of § 131 of the Social Welfare Act). The student must have this amount per month. The minimum bank balance is not applicable for minors.

An Estonian student visa can be rejected due to several reasons. For example, as per the EU Visa Code, a rejection can be due to lack of a valid travel document, inability to prove the reasons for stay, the applicant does not have sufficient documentation, or does not intend to return to the home country after completion of studies.

If a visa refusal takes place, you can apply for an appeal. The application for appeal must be sent within 30 days of visa rejection. You can only submit a written appeal to the Embassy of Estonia in New Delhi. The appeal can be filed personally or with the help of a representative or by post.  If the decision remains unchanged you can reapply for the visa. The fee for the visa appeal is 80 EUR.
