BMSAT: An Overview

The Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test (BMSAT) is a computer-based test for undergraduate applicants. The exam consists of questions from biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The questions asked in this exam are from the material covered in higher-tier GCSE (or equivalent) science and mathematics courses during secondary education. The exam is conducted in collaboration with Pearson VUE. Therefore, you will have to take the test at a Pearson VUE authorised test centre.

BMSAT Format

The Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test is a 90-minute examination. This is an MCQ paper. 20 questions are asked from each subject. There is no negative marking. The exam format is given below:

What Is A Good BMSAT Score?

Oxford University’s admission process rarely operates in terms of pass or fail. There are no set marks for passing the paper. The university would receive your score before you do, give out decision letters, and then release the results. Your score is considered alongside your overall application. The maximum mark you can obtain on the paper is 80. Given below is an estimate of the BMSAT scores. Those who score above 60 have a high chance of being called for an interview.

How Much Does the BMSAT Cost?

You would be thrilled to know there are no fees for the BMSAT exam. This is because Oxford University does not charge students for taking their entrance exams. You only have to focus on preparing for the test, registering on time, choosing the nearest test centre, and taking the exam. Keep in mind that some test centres may charge you a small fee for invigilation.. 

When to Take BMSAT for Oxford?

The BMSAT for Oxford is usually conducted in October. The tests are never held at weekends. To register, know about the registration dates, test booking dates, and exam dates. They are given below:

How to Register for the BMSAT?

The Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test registration process is similar to other entrance exams. You can register for the test by visiting the Oxford Admissions Test Registration portal. The registration process is as follows:

1. When the exam registration starts, visit the Oxford Admissions Test Registration portal and register for your account. Thereafter, you can log in and add a test card. You will have to choose Biomedical Sciences as your course.
2. Book the exam date and test centre when the test booking starts. Try to book the exam as early as possible. This will give you the time to choose the best possible date. You can also request that access arrangements be made if you require the same.
3. At this stage, your examination is already booked. Go back to the home page for confirmation.

When Will the BMSAT Results Be Announced?

You can expect your results in January next year. Oxford would shortlist the candidates for 2026 entry, and an interview will be held. Thereafter, decisions regarding whether your application has been successful are expected to be announced on 13 January 2026. The decisions are released via UCAS in the morning. The college will also directly communicate with you regarding your application. Generally, decisions are taken based on the following criteria:

3. Your academic record
4. Your personal statement 
5. Academic references 

Once the decision letters are sent, the BMSAT results will automatically be available. You can log in to your account to check results. You can also request feedback by writing to the college.

Is the BMSAT Test Hard?

Yes. The Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test is considered a challenging paper. There are many reasons for it. Some of these reasons are listed below:

1. The test is not about recalling facts. Instead, it is about how you can apply your scientific knowledge to different scenarios and your problem-solving skills. Therefore, you need a deep understanding of the subject and critical thinking skills to score well.
2.  Oxford University’s Biomedical Science courses are highly competitive. Therefore, you would be competing with high-achieving students from around the world.
3. The Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test is new. Therefore, you will hardly find previous years’ papers to practise. 
4. The exam is time-pressured and does not permit the use of calculators.
5. The syllabus is broad, even if the content is at the GCSE level.

What is the Difference Between BMAT and BMSAT?

BMAT and BMSAT are not the same. Oxford University replaced the with the Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) with the Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test (BMSAT). BMSAT was introduced in 2025. The difference between these two exams is given below:

7 Tips to Prepare for the BMSAT

Since the BMSAT exam is new, there are no previous year papers you can practise from. Moreover, there is no single textbook that gives you all the information you need. Therefore, you need to revise the school GCSE content. Here are some tips that can help you prepare:

1. The foundation of a good score for BMSAT is having a solid foundation of the science and mathematics content. Therefore, go through the GCSE textbook for Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Maths and ensure that you have a strong foundation.
2. Ensure that you are starting your preparation early. Early preparation gives you time to prepare all the subjects thoroughly.
3. Do not just memorise, learn how you can apply those scientific principles to situations. Dig out A-level or equivalent questions that use GCSE content in several ways. You can also look at the BMAT previous paper questions (although this is different), and try to solve them.
4. Practice under these conditions to build your time management skills 
5. If you know an excellent science and math tutor, seek guidance from them. You can also seek advice from previous Biodemical Sciences students who have given similar exams.

The BMSAT examination is a new examination that started in 2025. This exam has replaced the BMAT examination that most universities used to prefer earlier.
