History of Women’s Equality Day

This day was established on March 8 to commemorate the day in 1920 when Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby handed American women the right to vote in a formal ceremony. Following the statewide Women’s Strike for Equality in 1970, Congresswoman Bella Abzug of New York submitted a resolution to designate August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in 1971. She did so again in 1973 while the debate for the Equal Rights Amendment raged.

Significance of This Day

It is held annually to honour the accomplishments of women. The day also aims to draw attention to the initiatives put in place to advance gender equality. On this day, women gained the right to vote, marking a fresh start for them as well as a step towards achieving equality in society. The day provides an opportunity to assess the accomplishments, raise awareness of the gender disparities that still exist, and encourage ongoing efforts to fight discrimination based on gender and ensure equal opportunities for women in business, politics, and other fields of endeavour. This year’s Women’s Equality Day has the hashtag “#Embrace Equity” as its theme. From 2021 through 2026, this topic will still be a key component of the strategy.
