Hello and welcome to everyone present here. Please allow me to present my ‘Adult Education Speech’ before you. Adult education is the practice of learning to gain new knowledge, skills, values, and ways of solving problems. Age is considered as just a number, as there is no limit on how old a person can be to learn and grow. There is always room for improvement and learning. Can a person be perfect? Is there anyone apart from Google who knows everything? No, I am not talking about God. 

Literacy and Education Difference

Everyone regardless of age, wealth, or health, should have access to education. It is considered a powerful tool for an individual and the community as a whole. The adult literacy rate in India is 81%. However, literacy and education are the same. The ability to read and write is what literacy is about. Education refers to the formal and informal understanding of concepts and ideas. 

Importance of Adult Education

The World Bank published a report titled ‘The Changing Nature of Word.’ According to this World Development Report 2019, adult education is an important aspect of improving working skills in adults, so that they can understand and adjust to the changing future and improve progressively.

Adult education is an essential part of a country’s development as it makes people aware of relevant skills and knowledge, and their responsibilities towards their community and country. Adult education not only benefits the individual but helps in creating responsible citizens in a society. Image a society where everyone understands their responsibilities and is determined to complete them. 

Countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, Liechtenstein, etc, have a 100% literacy rate. A country where adults are educated has strong economic development, can achieve sustainable development, and maintains peace and security. 

Types of Adult Education

Education also has several categories and sub-categories. It includes basic, continuing, adult literacy, professional and community adult education. 

Basic adult education offers foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and other basic information that was previously not part of formal education. 

Continuing education offers courses and workshops for individuals and professionals looking to update their knowledge and skills and want to learn new developments in a particular niche.

Professional adult education is more focused on career-related skills and knowledge. Adult literacy courses aim to enhance the literacy skills of adults having a hard time in reading and writing. Community adult education includes a wide range of topics depending on a community’s interests and requirements.
