Admission Process For UG & PG

The good news is that the process is pretty straightforward. But yes, UG and PG admissions follow different paths, so it’s important to know which one applies to you. Let’s walk through how it works.

Undergraduate (UG) Admission

For most UG programs like B.E. and B.Tech, Anna University does not hold its own entrance exam. Instead, everything goes through TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions), which is handled by the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE).

The process is fully online and goes something like this:

  1. First, you register on the TNEA website when the form is out.
  2. You’ll need to fill in your marks, upload documents, and pay a small fee (₹500 for general category, ₹250 for SC/ST).
  3. After registration, you’ll get something called a random number and it’s used only if there’s a tie in marks.
  4. Then comes the rank list, which is prepared using your Class 12 marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Maths.
  5. After that, counselling begins online. You get to choose your preferred college and branch.
  6. If you’re allotted a seat, just download your allotment letter and report to the college.

That’s it. No entrance exam. Just your board marks and smart choices during counselling.

For B.Arch Aspirants:

It’s slightly different here. You’ll need to appear for the NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) first. Based on your NATA score and 12th marks, Anna University will make a merit list. Then, through a separate counselling process, you’ll get your seat. So yes, if you’re eyeing architecture, don’t skip the NATA exam.

Postgraduate (PG) Admission

PG admissions are entrance-based. That means if you want to study M.E., M.Tech, or M.Arch, you’ll need to give the CEETA PG exam (formerly part of TANCET). For MBA and MCA, you’ll take TANCET. Here’s how it usually works:

  1. You apply for TANCET or CEETA PG on the official Anna University portal.
  2. Once you give the exam and results are out, you apply for TANCA Counselling (Tamil Nadu Common Admissions).
  3. During counselling, you choose your courses and colleges.
  4. Based on your exam score, community category, and seat availability, you’ll be allotted a seat.

The process is smooth, but be sure to keep track of dates and document uploads because Anna University is quite strict about that.

Documents You’ll Need

Make a neat folder with all this, because without these, your seat could be cancelled.

  • Class 10 and 12 mark sheets
  • Transfer Certificate
  • Community certificate (for OBC/SC/ST applicants)
  • Nativity Certificate (if required)
  • TANCET/CEETA PG/NATA scorecard (for PG and B.Arch)
  • Counselling call letter
  • Passport-size photos
  • Valid ID proof (like Aadhaar card)

Entrance Exams Accepted

At Anna University, not every course needs an entrance exam but for some programs, you must take one. If you’re applying for UG or PG, here’s a clear look at the entrance exams the university accepts in 2025.

For Undergraduate Courses

  • B.E. / B.Tech: No entrance exam. Admission is done through TNEA, which uses your Class 12 marks (mainly Physics, Chemistry, and Maths).
  • B.Arch: You need to take the NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture). Your seat will be given based on a combination of your 12th marks and NATA score.

For Postgraduate Courses

  • M.E. / M.Tech / M.Arch: You must appear for CEETA PG 2025, which is held by Anna University. (Earlier, this was part of TANCET. Now CEETA PG is the official exam for these courses.)
