What is GI Tag?
A Geographical Indication (GI) is like a special label for products that come from a specific place. It means that the product is made in a special way, has a unique taste or quality, or is famous because of where it comes from. Things like wine, cheese, tea, and even handicrafts can have a GI tag. This tag makes sure that only people from that place can use that name for their product. So, when you see a GI tag, you know that the product is real and comes from where it says it does.

Who Regulates Geographical Indications
Geographical Indications (GIs) are a form of intellectual property that protects the name and reputation of products from a specific geographic location. This unique identifier ensures that consumers can trust the product’s authenticity and quality, as it is directly linked to its place of origin.
The concept of GIs is recognised globally as an important component of intellectual property rights (IPRs). International agreements like the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property provide a framework for safeguarding these identifiers. Moreover, the World Trade Organization (WTO) has established specific rules governing GIs under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).
India has also implemented some measures to protect its rich heritage of products through the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. This legislation, which came into force in 2003, provides a legal framework for registering and protecting GIs within the country. A significant milestone was achieved in 2004-05 when Darjeeling tea became the first product in India to be awarded a GI tag.
