The full form of NRLM is National Rural Livelihood Mission. Several rural development initiatives are in development. One such government project for rural areas is the National Rural Livelihood Mission. In November 2015, Aajeevika – NRLM was renamed Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM).
The mission aims to transition towards a strategy that is driven by demand, enabling governments to create their own action plans for reducing poverty based on livelihood.

“To reduce poverty by enabling the poor households to access gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities, resulting in an appreciable improvement in their livelihoods on a sustainable basis, through building strong grassroots institutions of the poor.”
Values of NRLM
- Involving the poorest and giving them a meaningful involvement in all processes
- Transparency and accountability in all institutions and procedures
- Self-sufficiency and self-reliance in the community
- The poor should have ownership and vital involvement in all of their institutions, including planning, implementation, and oversight.
Principles of NRLM
- The poor have a strong desire to escape poverty and inherent ability.
- Social mobilisation and robust institutions are required to unlock the intrinsic powers of the underprivileged.
- An external support structure that is both dedicated and compassionate is required to induce social mobilisation, develop robust institutions, and empower.
- This upward mobility is supported by:
- Enabling knowledge dissemination
- Building skills
- Credit access
- Marketing Access
- Livelihood services access
