History, Affiliations and Rankings
Established in 1831, as a men’s college under the Methodist Episcopal Church with the assistance of the prominent citizens of Middletown, the college became the first institution of higher education to be named after John Wesley. The institute became co-educational in 1970.The first class had 48 pupils of all ages, the president, three instructors, and a tutor; the annual fee was $36.The Wesleyan University has affiliations with Annapolis Group, CLAC, COFHE, Oberlin Group, NAICU, and Space-grant. The Wesleyan University ranks #17 in National Liberal Arts Colleges and #43rd in US College Rankings by the Times Higher Education and #601-650 in QS World University Rankings 2022.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
Wesleyan University has a sprawling campus of 316 acres settled in the centre of Connecticut, Middletown. The Wesleyan University campus is just two hours drive away from Boston and New York City by car. The campus has over 300 buildings including Olin Memorial Library, six storied Exley Science Center, Andrus Public Affairs Centre; and Van Vleck Observatory. Wesleyan University is an affiliate member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference and has over 16 club sports teams, 30 varsity teams, and 8 intramural sports. Wesleyan University offers teaching in 46 departments and 45 major subjects of study and confers graduate and bachelor's degrees. There are 11 disciplines of study where the doctor of philosophy and master of arts degrees are commonly conferred. Each year, there are over 900 courses available for students to pick from, and they are expected to collaborate with the faculty to develop over 900 unique tutorials and lessons.The Wesleyan University provides a broad range of degree options for its students in the faculties of Arts, liberal studies, Performance Curation, Philosophy, and also doctoral degrees in six disciplines.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Wesleyan University has been accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Wesleyan’s athletic teams participate in the NCAA Division III New England Small College Athletic Conference. The college is also affiliated with the unofficial Little here athletic conference with Amherst and Williams. Forbes ranks Wesleyan #10 on its list of top U.S. liberal arts colleges for 2019.Kiplinger ranks Wesleyan #10 among liberal arts colleges in its annual list of the best college values in the U.S. for 2019 Wesleyan is ranked first among all national liberal arts universities by U.S. News & World Report in terms of the top colleges for veterans in 2022.The notable alumni of the institute are Michael Bay (Film Producer and Director), Jonathan Bloom (Author), and David Brancaccio (Host of Marketplace Morning Report).
