About the University
The University of East London was founded in 1892 by the newly established County Borough of West Ham in the UK, which chose to establish a West Ham Technical Institute to serve the local population. The North East London Polytechnic was founded in 1970 when three distinct colleges (West Ham, Walthamstow, and Dagenham) merged to become the North East London Polytechnic. It was renamed the Polytechnic of East London in 1989 when the North East London Polytechnic became a higher education school in 1988. The Polytechnic of East London has officially renamed the University of East London in 1992. Since 1898, the University of East London has been pioneering futures, from the Second Industrial Revolution to the fourth, which the world is presently experiencing. UEL is a career-focused institution committed to helping students acquire the skills, emotional intelligence, and creativity they need to succeed in today's fast-paced world. The university is also affiliated with international organisations like MillionPlus, Association of Commonwealth Universities, Universities UK and European University Association. The university has an overall ranking of #801-100 in the QS World University Rankings 2022 and THE World University Rankings 2022 respectively. According to the Complete University Guide 2022 and the Guardian University League Table 2022, the university ranks at #127 and #114 in the UK.
UEL is in the center of this industrial and creative transformation that makes up a great global gateway, with campuses in Stratford and the historic Royal Albert Dock. The university's Docklands campus and housing are located in a lovely, lively area directly next to the river, with the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) right outside the door (and free UEL buses running to Stratford). Furthermore, students live in beautiful surroundings and are never far from the activity and prospects for work experience in downtown London. The well-known Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which includes a tennis court, hockey grounds, and a swimming pool, is located on the Stratford campus. The College of Arts, Technology and Innovation, the College of Applied Health and Communities, and the College of Professional Services make up the University of East London. The university is renowned worldwide for its plethora of courses in a variety of disciplines like Architecture and the Visual Arts, Civil Engineering, Cultural and Media Studies, Education, Psychology, and Sports Science.
UEL's ambitious but attainable ambition is to become the UK's premier career-focused, entrepreneurial university, preparing students for future occupations while also providing the innovation needed to sustainably and inclusively drive that future. UEL was placed 2nd in the UK for teaching quality in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings and was included in the top 200 young universities worldwide (Times Higher Education Young University Rankings). Furthermore, the University has been rated the UK's best-improved university over the previous decade (Times Higher Education). The University of East London has been designing and implementing a new 10-year plan, Vision 2028, to alter our curriculum, pedagogy, research impact, and collaborations in order to make a significant difference in student, graduate, and community achievement during the 2018-19 academic year. Some of the famous alumni of the university include Gemma Gibbons (Judo Olympian), Edison James (Former Prime Minister of Dominica), Adam Gemili (Team GB Sprinter, 2012 Olympics), Aimee Willmott (Double Commonwealth and European medallist) and many more such golden names.
UEL is always trying to establish a dynamic approach to equity, diversity, and inclusion that is based on our Institutional Equity Strategy. It is a melting pot of cultures and is extremely welcoming to students from all over the world. UEL has established a dedicated Centre for Student Success to provide a robust support network to guarantee students' employability and personalities grow and develop. Furthermore, the University of East London International Office provides assistance from the beginning of the application process through the arrival in London. International students can attend a free orientation programme prior to the start of the semester, and academic preparatory courses for select undergraduate programmes (as well as pre-sessional English) are also offered. After graduation, the university's employment center assists students in finding internships, placements, and job experiences. Adidas, Your M&S, KPMG, and JP Morgan are among the top recruiters.
