University of Trieste, officially known as Università degli Studi di Trieste, or UniTS in Italian was established in 1924 in Trieste, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. The predecessor of the university was Superior School in Commerce. When Trieste was a part of the Austrian-Hungary empire, the lot of requests by scholars and academicians were turned down for the establishment of the high school institution. In 1924, after the annexation of Trieste to Italy, the government decided to grant the university status to Superior School in Commerce and it was turned into a university, by king's decree. During the World War II, the university was restricted to offer and teach some courses and a lot of faculties were shut. But as the war ended, the allied powers decided to put Trieste under the joint control of the United Kingdom and the United States of America, in preparation for the establishment of a fully independent State, the Free Territory of Trieste, which nevertheless never came to exist. In 1954, University of Trieste, after getting merged to Italy, started functioning independently, without any external pressure and control. Soon after that, University of Trieste started gaining international recognition with its unique approach towards the institutional building.
Today, the main campus of University of Trieste is centered on the building in Piazzale Europa in Trieste. Along with that, University of Trieste has successfully managed to secure its present at the number of places in the city. The faculties and departments of the university have been located in the historical buildings of Trieste which are not far from the main campus. There are few faculties and departments which are not present in Trieste such as Pordenone Campus and Gorizia campus which offer programs in Engineering and Education in Pordenone Campus and programs in Friuli Venezia Giulia region and in the neighboring Veneto region. Particularly, in International and Diplomatic Studies are offered in Gorizia Campus. There are total 16,700 students enrolled in University of Trieste, out of which, 56% are female. Not just this, University of Trieste also has academic staff of 550 members. The faculty student ratio of the university stands at 1:23. According to the QS and THE Ranking, University of Trieste is ranked #701-750 and #401-500 in 2019.
