The Université de Moncton, one of the most prestigious French educational institutions in Canada, was established in 1963 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Started as modern Université de Moncton, the university is a result of the merger of three colleges including Collège Saint-Joseph (Memramcook, 1864), Collège Saint-Louis (Edmundston, 1946) and Collège du Sacré-Cœur (Caraquet, 1899). As a result of the increasing number of students and faculties, Université de Moncton started to offer undergraduate degree programs in Adult Education and was renamed as Université de Moncton in 1989. The Université de Moncton is known for the student’s protest which shook the entire nation and started Acadian nationalism in the region.
Today, Université de Moncton is comprised of eight faculties including Education, Engineering (includes Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering), Graduate Studies, Health Sciences and Community Services and Sciences and Law and Administration, Arts and Social Sciences. It offers over 165 programs including 60 undergraduate programs, 44 graduate programs and 7 postgraduate programs in all streams. Université de Moncton is well regarded for the Faculty of Law which is highly competitive when it comes to the admission. It also offers somewhat same programs in distant learning, part time and co-ops level. Moncton also has a number of research centers and institutions, and partnerships with other universities in Canada which allow students to undertake research study under the guidance of professors.
Today, Université de Moncton has three campuses in Moncton, Edmundston and Shippagan in New Brunswick, Canada. The main campus is situated at Moncton which has a stadium, Physical Education Centers and Theatre and Cinema. There are a total 4,300 students enrolled in the university with approximately 350 academic staff. According to the QS Ranking, the Université de Moncton is ranked #55 in Canada and #2000-2500 in the world.
Some of the notable alumni of Université de Moncton are Michel Bastarache, Puisne Justice on the Supreme Court of Canada, Herménégilde Chiasson, professor, poet and playwright, and former Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, Antonine Maillet, Acadian author and winner of the Prix Goncourt, Percy Mockler, Canadian senator, Roméo LeBlanc, Former Governor General of Canada and Camille Thériault, former Premier of New Brunswick and many others.
