History, Affiliations and Rankings

The prestigious institution of the University of Glasgow came into existence in 1451 by Papal Bull. If we determine the age of the university, we will get to know that the university is one of the 4 ancient universities in Scotland. During the 18th century, the University of Glasgow was a part of the Scottish Enlightenment along with other universities like St. Andrews, Aberdeen, and Edinburg. Among all the British universities, this one also has the power to award undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in its own name. The Association of Commonwealth Universities, The Guild, PEGASUS, the famous Russell Group, and Universitas 21 are all affiliated with the University of Glasgow. It is also one of the top 100 universities in the world, and its ancient architecture is thought to have inspired Harry Potter's Hogwarts school. The university is also ranked 73rd in the latest QS World University Rankings 2022, 36th by CWTS Leiden Rankings and 86th by Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2022. While nationally, the University of Glasgow is ranked 12th by the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide, 16th by the Complete University Guide and 11th by the Guardian for 2022.

Campus, Infrastructure and Courses

The university has 3 campuses namely the Gilmorehill campus, Garscube campus and the Dumfries campus. The Gilmorehill campus is located in the city's West End, close to public transportation and walking distance from the city centre. It's a compact, campus-style environment with all of the advantages of being in a big city, and it's where the majority of the university's teaching and research facilities are located. The majestic Gilbert Scott building, with an iconic bell tower that is one of Glasgow's most prominent monuments, is located in the heart of the campus. The picturesque Garscube estate, which spans 200 acres and is approximately 4 miles from the University's Gilmorehill campus, is located on the city's northwest outskirts. The School of Veterinary Medicine, Wolfson Hall of Residence, and outdoor sports facilities are all located here. Finally, the Dumfries campus is a rural campus in southwest Scotland with a close-knit community of students from the United Kingdom and throughout the world. The campus is nestled on 85 acres of green parkland with spectacular views of the Solway estuary and hills, as well as close access to hiking and cycling paths, rivers and lochs, and a short walk or bus ride to the old town centre. Currently, the university has 4 colleges within it that are emphasized in the fields of Medical, Arts, Social Sciences, Science & Engineering, Veterinary & Life Sciences. The Gartnavel Royal Hospital takes over the medical section of the university which is situated on Great Western Road. The undergraduate honours degrees in arts, social sciences, and science at the University allow students to study a variety of areas before deciding on a specialisation. Their taught Master's programmes have a predetermined format and last around a year.

Accomplishments and Alumni

During the year 2015, the university had the 23rd highest entry qualification requirement for undergraduate courses among all British universities. Apart from this, the university has introduced an award which is known as the World-Changing Alumni Award. The institution now has 15 Regius Professorships, which is more than any other university in the United Kingdom. In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), over 70% of the university's research was scored in the top 2 categories (88% in the top 3), and 18 subjects areas were rated in the top 10 in the UK, with 14 subject areas classified as the best in Scotland.
