History, Affiliations and Rankings

Founded in 1844, the University at Albany is a public university. In 1905, the university decided to restructure its academic offerings, and later on, it was the first college of higher education in New York City to provide a bachelor's degree. In 1913, the university began providing postgraduate degrees. The University has an affiliation with APLU and the State University of New York. The University at Albany ranks #751-800 in QS World University Rankings 2022 and ranks #351-400 in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

There are two campuses of the University at Albany: the Uptown and the Downtown campus. The Uptown campus is the main campus situated at 1400 Washington Avenue in Albany. The campus buildings feature domes, towers, and fountains. The main library, Performing Arts Centre, and the Atmospheric Sciences Research Centre are all situated at this campus. The second campus, which is known as the Downtown Campus, was built in 1909. This campus includes the Rockefeller College of Policy and Public Affairs, College of Information Technology, School of Criminal Justice, and the School of Social Welfare. Moreover, a new campus, Health Sciences Campus was started which spreads across 87 acres and it includes the Cancer Research Centre and the School of Public Health. The university has a total of 9 schools that offer more than 50 undergraduate programs and 150+ post-graduate programs.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

The University at Albany is a Research 1 college. University at  Albany was among one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities to be awarded the 2020 Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement Classification. The University is recognized by the Board of Regents of New York State, which has registered all its courses and degrees and has fully approved its professional degrees through the State Education Department. The University at Albany is also a representative of the Council of Graduate Schools in the U.S. and has been fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. 

Some of the top alumni of this university are Steven Berkowitz (1980), former Senior Vice President of Microsoft Online Services, and CEO of MOVE, Joshua Furnas (2007), co-founder of Selfless Tee and Jang Young-Sik (PhD 1970), economist, former president of the Korea Electric Power Company.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The University at Albany values diversity in all its dimensions. University has more than 17,000 student enrolments out of which about 13,000 are undergraduates and 4,000 are postgraduates with more than 600 faculty members on its premises. Of the total student enrolments, more than 1,500 students are international combined on all its campuses. They have about 48% male students and 52% female students making a fairly balanced gender ratio.
