The beginning of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) can be traced back to the opening of the Eiraku Hospital in the year 1899. However, it was only in the year 1928 that the school of dentistry was opened. It is situated in the Shoheizaka/ Yushima area and has 2 campuses which are the Koundai campus, the Yushima campus and the Surugadai campuses. The TMDU is the only school of medical and dental sciences for graduates in Japan. The 5 petals on the university’s plum blossom flower logo depicts the 5 faculties part of the university which includes:
1. Dentistry
2. Bio engineering
3. Medicine
4. Bio materials
5. Liberal Arts and Sciences
It was a TMDU department of Molecular Biology team that identified the ageing induced bone loss osteoporosis gene in the year 2014. The university along with the Imperial College of London has an active student exchange programme for research activities that are 3-5 months long. The university hospital focuses on serving the community and critical and remains open 24 hours a day.
