On-Campus Research Track Degree Options The department offers two on-campus Master's degree options for students interested in pursuing a research career: the MSCS with thesis and the MSCS no thesis/no report. Both degrees require 30 hours of coursework. The no thesis/no report option is defined by more organized coursework than the thesis option, which requires 2 thesis classes. Students admitted to the Master's program do not need to declare which degree they intend to pursue. Online Professional Degree Program For students seeking a professional master's degree, the department offers its Master of Science in Computer Science in an online format. The field of aerospace engineering developed because of humanity’s desire for aircraft systems for military, commercial, and civilian purposes; it was first called aeronautical engineering or aeronautics. When the space age began, it was natural for aeronautical engineers to participate in the development of spacecraft systems for space exploration. This branch of engineering became known as astronautical engineering or astronautics, and the combined field is called aerospace engineering or aeronautics and astronautics. Because of the diverse nature of the work, the aerospace engineer must have a basic knowledge of physics, mathematics, digital computation, and the various disciplines of aerospace engineering: aerodynamics and propulsion, structural mechanics, flight mechanics and orbital mechanics, and control. Because of their extensive education in fundamental disciplines, aerospace engineers can work in areas other than aerospace engineering and are employed in a wide range of careers. The objectives of the aerospace engineering degree program are to prepare students for professional practice in aerospace engineering and related engineering and scientific fields; to prepare students for such postbaccalaureate study as their aptitudes and professional goals may dictate; to instill in students a commitment to lifelong education and to ethical behavior throughout their professional careers; and to make students aware of the global and societal effects of technology. To meet these objectives, the faculty has designed a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes fundamentals in the basic sciences, mathematics, and the humanities, and integrates classroom and laboratory experiences in the engineering disciplines of aerodynamics and propulsion, structural mechanics, mechanics of materials, flight and orbital mechanics, controls, computation, electromechanical systems, design, and technical communication. The curriculum requires students to use modern engineering tools, to work individually, and to practice teamwork. The first two years of the aerospace engineering curriculum emphasize fundamental material along with engineering sciences, while the third year introduces concepts in the areas of aerodynamics and propulsion, structural mechanics, flight mechanics and orbital mechanics, and flight control. The fourth year provides further depth in aerospace engineering, with emphasis on design and laboratory courses. During the junior year, the student elects to pursue one of two design tracks, atmospheric flight or space flight. In addition, the student may choose electives that increase the breadth of the program or that provide additional depth within one or more subdisciplines within the department. Objectives The engineering mechanics graduate program is involved in teaching and research in analytical, computational, and experimental methods in mechanics of solids, structures, and materials and fluid mechanics. The objectives of the program are to enable the student to attain a deeper understanding of engineering mechanics fundamentals, a knowledge of recent developments, and the ability as a master’s degree student to participate in research and as a doctoral degree student to conduct individual research. The goals are accomplished through coursework, seminars, and active research programs. Areas of Study and Facilities Graduate study and facilities for research are offered in the areas of theoretical mechanics and applied mathematics, dynamics, computational mechanics, experimental fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, finite element methods, boundary element methods, experimental mechanics, solid and structural mechanics, and structural dynamics. The extensive facilities of Information Technology Services and related hardware for interactive computer graphics and real-time control of experiments are available to graduate students for research use. For experimental research, the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics maintains laboratory facilities on the main campus and at the J. J. Pickle Research Campus. These facilities include equipment for studies in high-velocity impact, structural dynamics, and materials science. The Department of Statistics and Data Sciences, the college’s newest academic unit, is transforming quantitative education at UT, building a national and international reputation for leadership in the field, engaging in important research to make inferences and decisions from data, and reaching significant milestones.

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Texas is one of the largest in the United States, with twenty-four active teaching faculty, twelve research scientists, more than twenty-four research associates and postdoctoral fellows, approximately thirty-four graduate students, and ninety-one undergraduate students. The research activities of the faculty and staff span virtually all of modern astronomy, from cosmology, first stars, galaxy formation and evolution, supernovae, black holes, and gamma-ray bursts, to our solar system, extrasolar planetary systems, star and planet formation and evolution, and the interstellar medium. A low student-teacher ratio ensures close work with faculty and researchers in the student's area of interest. Many faculty members maintain active international collaborations, and frequently use the world's premier ground and space based observatories. Collaborations are also common with groups in physics, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and geological science. The association between the Department of Astronomy and McDonald Observatory offers many benefits. Graduate students typically receive about 25% of the nights on the two largest telescopes at McDonald, with additional time being granted to their advisors for joint projects. Students doing dissertation research receive high priority on all telescopes.

The Department of Germanic Studies is one of the largest and most diverse departments in the country, combining traditional coverage and breadth with new interdisciplinary and theoretical approaches. The undergraduate and graduate students receive a comprehensive introduction to the languages, literature, and cultures of the Germanic-speaking countries and to the increasingly multicultural, transnational, and global contexts that define these cultures today. Objectives Graduate degrees in biomedical engineering have been offered by the University since 1974. The undergraduate degree program and the Department of Biomedical Engineering were established in 2001. The department fosters a unique environment in which scholars and scientists may excel in both fundamental research and its translation to clinical applications. The mission of the UT Austin graduate program in biomedical engineering is to educate students in the fundamentals of engineering and science as they affect biology and medicine and to perform multidisciplinary, disease-oriented research at the molecular, cellular, organ, and systemic levels. The program aims fully to integrate biology and engineering research and education at the graduate level. The graduate program has approximately a hundred students, with backgrounds in biology, chemistry, physics, and various engineering disciplines. Students come from all over the United States and the world to gain unique knowledge and experience. Apart from coursework and research in some of the world’s premier laboratories, there are many opportunities for personal and professional development through interaction with industry professionals, conference attendance, and seminars with leaders in the field. Doctoral students receive full financial support, either through teaching assistant or graduate research assistant positions or through one of many fellowships. More than half the students in the program have fellowships from a source like the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, the Graduate School, or the Cockrell School of Engineering. Facilities for Graduate Work The Department of Biomedical Engineering has offices and laboratories in the Biomedical Engineering Building, completed in 2008, and laboratories in the Engineering and Education Resource Center, completed in 2017. Research is also conducted in the Dell Medical School, at partner institutions in Houston such as the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Students have access to facilities for research in biochemical and protein engineering, cell and tissue engineering, gene therapy, cell-electronic interfaces and nanostructure engineering, cell biomechanics, whole-body biomechanics and gait analysis, thermal engineering, optical spectroscopy and imaging, ultrasound imaging, laser-tissue interactions, image processing, biosignal analysis and computer graphics, protein bioinformatics, functional genomics, biomimetics, protein modeling, and computational disease diagnosis.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree program provides a strong technical background for students planning to begin careers upon graduation and for those interested in graduate study in computer science. This program allows students to take more coursework in computer science and related technical areas than does the bachelor of arts degree program. In addition to the three Options leading to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, students may apply to Option IV, the Integrated Program, which leads to simultaneous completion of the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and the Master of Science in Computer Science, the Master of Science in Information Studies, or the Master of Science in Computational Science, Engineering, and Mathematics. The requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Option IV, are given below. The requirements for the Master of Science in Computer Science, the Master of Science in Information Studies, and the Master of Science in Computational Science, Engineering, and Mathematics are described in the Graduate Catalog. As an alternative to the Bachelor of Science and Arts and the Bachelor of Arts degrees, the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is designed with a twofold purpose: to offer students a more extensive scientific program that may better prepare them for graduate study or employment, and to recognize students who choose to pursue a more demanding program. Students are given the opportunity to develop greater breadth and depth in their mathematical programs as well as to combine mathematics with a concentration in another scientific discipline. Students seeking the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics select one of the following Options: Actuarial Science, Mathematics for Secondary Teaching, Mathematics Honors, or Mathematics. The student may concentrate in any of these five areas. The objectives of the program are to enable the student to attain a deeper understanding of aerospace engineering fundamentals, a knowledge of recent developments, and the ability as a master’s degree student to participate in research and as a doctoral degree student to conduct individual research. The goals are accomplished through coursework, seminars, and active research programs. Areas of Study and Facilities Aerothermodynamics and fluid mechanics. This concentration involves study and research in experimental, theoretical, and computational aerodynamics, gas dynamics, turbulence, plasma dynamics, heat transfer, and combustion. Research is presently being conducted in nonequilibrium and rarefied gas flows, planetary atmospheres, turbulence control, shock-boundary layer interactions, thermal and glow-discharge plasmas, turbulent mixing/combustion, numerical methods for turbulent reacting flows, and advanced optical diagnostics and sensors. Facilities include Mach 2 and Mach 5 blowdown wind tunnels, a 50kw inductively coupled plasma torch, a 15" × 20" water channel, a laser sensor laboratory, combustion facilities, a plasma engineering laboratory, and extensive laser and camera systems for advanced flow diagnostics. Excellent computational facilities include a variety of workstations, and access to very-large-scale, high-performance computers at the Texas Advanced Computing Center. Solids, structures, and materials. This concentration involves study and research in mechanics of composite materials, fracture mechanics, micromechanics of materials, constitutive equations, mechanical behavior at high strain rates, structural analysis, and structural stability. Experimental facilities include equipment for static structural testing; digital data acquisition equipment; uniaxial and biaxial materials-testing machines; custom loading devices; environmental chambers; microscopes; photomechanics facilities; composites processing equipment; facilities for microstructural analysis; and high-speed imaging and high-strain-rate mechanical testing facilities. Computing facilities include workstations, high-performance computers, and networks of workstations. Structural dynamics. This concentration involves study and research in theoretical, computational, and experimental structural dynamics, including aeroelasticity, rotor dynamics, morphing structures, adaptive structures, vibration and noise control, and computational techniques for very-large-scale vibration analysis. Computational and experimental facilities include high-performance shared- and distributed-memory multiprocessor systems, actuators, sensors, balances, and data-acquisition systems for structural testing, system identification, and control. Facilities for testing aeroelastic models on a whirl test stand or in a wind tunnel are also available. Orbital Mechanics. This area involves study and research in the applications of orbital mechanics and remote sensing in the context of spacecraft and celestial bodies. Applications and customers include NASA, military, a variety of governmental agencies, and the rapidly growing commercial space industry. Research in spaceflight mechanics includes trajectory and mission design, nonlinear optimization, numerical methods, perturbations, dynamical systems theory, high fidelity simulation, and high performance computing. Research in nonlinear estimation provides observable properties of dynamical systems in order to enable autonomous operations of spacecraft and ground-based tracking for satellite applications and situational awareness. Research in space domain awareness and space traffic management seeks to develop and deliver the decision-making science for the space community. Example topics include space object detection, tracking, identification, and characterization via multi-source information collection, curation, and fusion. Research in satellite applications include the development of space geodetic and both active and passive satellite remote sensing techniques, such as Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), laser and microwave tracking of satellites, and the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). Application areas include measurement and interpretation of global Earth System variables such as the gravity field, loading, Earth rotation, and terrestrial reference frames; their application to research in the atmosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, and hydrosphere, as well as their mutual interactions; and GNSS signals, assurance, and applications for navigation and precise positioning. Research is supported by a large database of satellite remote sensing measurements, state-of-the-art high performance computing resources, GPS receivers, and image processing equipment. Controls, Autonomy and Robotics.This area involves research in system theory, controls, networks, autonomy, and robotics with applications to the navigation, guidance, control, and flight mechanics of space, air, sea, and land based vehicles. Major research topics include onboard-optimal path-planning, differential games, hybrid-systems analysis, learning-based control, multi-vehicle coordination, swarm systems, vision and radio-based navigation, controlled-mobility wireless networks, robust communications, trust, and the study of human-robot interaction problems. Several of these projects are sponsored by: the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, the Missile Defense Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratories.

As an alternative to the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Bachelor of Science in Psychology is designed to offer students a more extensive scientific program that may better prepare them for graduate study or employment in research fields. Students interested in mathematics-based or physiology-based areas of psychology have the opportunity to develop more breadth and depth in the fields that complement their area of interest within psychology. To accomplish this goal, the curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Psychology puts more emphasis on natural sciences and less on language arts. A student may not earn both the Bachelor of Arts with a major in psychology and the Bachelor of Science in Psychology. A total of 120 semester hours is required. Thirty-six hours must be in upper-division courses. At least 60 hours, including 18 hours of upper-division coursework, must be completed in residence at the University. Provided these residence rules are met, credit may be earned by examination, by extension, by correspondence (up to 30 percent of the hours required for the degree), or, with the approval of the dean, by work transferred from another institution. Up to 16 semester hours of classroom and/or correspondence coursework may be taken on the pass/fail basis; this coursework may be counted only as electives. Students in this degree program may pursue any of the honors programs available to Bachelor of Arts, Plan I, students. The field of kinesiology consists of biomechanical, physiological, psychological, managerial, epidemiological, rehabilitative, and sociocultural approaches to the study of human movement and personal and public health. The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health degree program offers five majors: applied movement science, exercise science, health promotion and behavioral science, physical culture and sports, and sport management. The applied movement science program is designed for students interested in studying human movement as a background for helping others develop motor skills, physically active lifestyles and fitness. Students who successfully complete the physical education activity track can be recommended for teacher certification in physical education. The exercise science program is appropriate preparation for further study in sport and exercise sciences or in movement-related areas such as physical therapy and sport medicine. The health promotion and behavioral science major is designed to prepare graduates for a number of professions including public health, community health promotion, university/college health services, government agencies, voluntary health agencies, corporate fitness and wellness, and healthcare centers. The sport management major is designed for students who are interested in the organization, marketing, and management of sport and/or entertainment programs. The physical culture and sports major is designed to prepare students for graduate school and/or careers related to a social science approach to sport and exercise. The curriculum for the degree has four components: (a) the University-wide Core Curriculum; (b) prescribed work for the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health; (c) major requirements, which include a minor or specialization; and (d) electives. A total of at least 120 semester hours of coursework is required for the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health. For all majors, at least 36 hours must be in upper-division coursework.

The courses that make up the Basic Sequence within the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering serve many purposes. First and foremost, these courses provide students the knowledge they need to be successful in the engineering courses they will take in theTechnical Component. Second, the Basic Sequence courses are designed to help students determine whether Electrical and Computer Engineering is the right major for them before they get too entrenched into the curriculum. Finally, the Basic Sequence courses are good indicators to help students choose the technical components they would like to focus on during their final semesters.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NEUROSCIENCE The Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience provides a strong foundation in the core sciences and related mathematical disciplines, along with the opportunity for training in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, or psychology. Distinctive features of the program include an emphasis on developing the quantitative, statistical, mathematical, and computational skills required in neuroscience, and meaningful hands-on laboratory experience. Prescribed Work Common to All Options In the process of fulfilling degree requirements, all students must complete: Core curriculum Skills and experience flags: a. Writing: two flagged courses beyond Rhetoric and Writing 306 or its equivalent, including one at the upper-division level b. Quantitative reasoning: one flagged course c. Independent inquiry: one flagged course Courses that may be used to fulfill flag requirements are identified in the Course Schedule. They may be used simultaneously to fulfill other requirements, unless otherwise specified. Students are encouraged to discuss options with their academic advisors. At least 21 semester hours of upper-division coursework, including 18 semester hours in biology and neuroscience, must be completed in residence at the University. All students must complete at least 36 semester hours of upper-division coursework.

Objectives This program is designed to educate engineers to solve problems related to exploring and recovering subsurface resources such as oil and gas. The program allows students to take courses in a broad range of areas, including computational geosystems engineering, drilling engineering, environmental and geosystems engineering, formation evaluation, petroleum economics, production engineering, and reservoir engineering. Once students have chosen a degree option, they may choose to work closely with a faculty member conducting research in their area of interest. The program offers a doctoral degree based on a combination of coursework and research, and a master’s degree based on either a thesis or a report, or on coursework alone. Facilities for Graduate Work Excellent facilities for graduate research in petroleum and geosystems engineering are available in the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Building. In addition to departmental offices and classrooms, the building houses over 40,000 square feet of laboratory space, providing unique capabilities for studies in production logging, vertical and inclined flow in wells, artificial lift, core flooding for enhanced oil recovery, subsurface environmental remediation, drilling, stimulation, rock mechanics, well log digitizing and interpretation, PVT analysis, reservoir simulation development and application, and unconventional resources. Additional laboratory space at the J. J. Pickle Research Campus is used for research. A machine shop is maintained to fabricate and support research equipment. In addition to the facilities of Information Technology Services, students have access to a host of computers housed in the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering, including numerous PCs, workstations, and supercomputing facilities at the Texas Advanced Computing Center. Excellent library facilities include the Mallet Chemistry Library, the Walter Geology Library, and the Kuehne Physics Mathematics Astronomy Library.

Astronomy tells us about the place of humankind in the universe: how Earth was created, how the Sun was formed, how galaxies form and evolve. It tells us where the universe is going and where it came from. Astronomers address these questions at a fundamental level. Their goal is to determine the basic and controlling properties of the universe and to transmit that knowledge to society. The Bachelor of Science in Astronomy is designed to give students an understanding of the universe and to prepare them to participate in the advancement of this exciting search. Two Options are available: Astronomy and Astronomy Honors. Students who plan to follow Option II, Astronomy Honors, must be admitted to the Dean’s Scholars Honors Program.
