The University of Edinburgh was established in 1583 as “the town’s college” by the Edinburgh town council under the charter granted by King James IV in 1582. It remained under the control of the town council until 1858, after which it was granted autonomy under the Universities act. The University is a member of many prestigious organizations like Universitas 21, League of European Research Universities, Russell Group, UNA Europa, Fairtrade, and many more. The University of Edinburgh ranks #16 in the QS World University Rankings and #30 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the year 2022.

The University of Edinburgh has five main sites in Edinburgh. Central area, King’s building, BioQuater, Easter Bush, and Western General. It consists of many significant historical monuments like St. Cecilia’s hall, Teviot row house, and Mylne’s Court student residence. The campus of the University of Edinburgh is spread across the city of Edinburgh. The University offers a multitude of courses in a plethora of fields, ranging from philosophical courses to high technical courses.
