History, Affiliations and Rankings
St Lawrence University is a liberal arts university located in Canton, New York. The University was founded in 1856 by the officers of the Universalist church, who were trying to establish an educational centre in that region. The present university that exists was established as a Preparatory Department to provide a foundation for scholastic research. The university is affiliated with NAICU, CLAC, Annapolis Group, and CIC.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The University has 1000 acres of campus which are located on the south side of the Village. The main developed field consists of just 20% of the total campus area and is centred along Park Street. The acceptance rate at St. Lawrence University is around 46.1% and it offers 40 major programs and 36 minors in a wide range of courses to the students. There are various extra facilities and opportunities that are provided by the university to the students. Some of the offerings are- Music, Theatre and Art. The University is a member of the Liberty League Athletic Conference. It has a division one Hockey team which includes around 40% of the student body. Some of the other games are Ice hockey, Squash, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Football, etc.
Accomplishments and Alumni
During World War II, the University was one of 131 schools nationwide that was a part of the V-12 Navy University Training Program which helped students to get into the National Navy department. The Johnson hall of the University received the LEED gold certification for its design and effective way of conserving nature and encouraging eco-friendly actions. In addition, Viggo Mortensen (American Actor), Susan Collins (United States Senator), Irving Bacheller (American Journalist), Martha MacCallum (American Broadcaster) are the notable people associated with the university.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
There are around 2,434 students enrolled at St. Lawrence. There are 2,365 undergraduate students and 18 graduate students. The full-time undergraduate population of St. Lawrence is made up of 55 per cent women and 45 per cent men.
