Situated in Central Tokyo, Sophia University was established in 1913 and was founded under the Christian Society of Jesus. The university is named after the Greek word “Sophia” which means wisdom. It is a Roman Catholic university and is one of the renowned higher learning institutions of Japan. Further, Sophia University has partnered with various western universities across the globe such as Georgetown, Yale, University of Hong Kong, University of Cologne, amongst others. Earlier, when it initially started, the university allowed admission to only male students and later was made a co-educational institution which now has more or less equal proportion of male and female students. The alumni of the university are known as Sophians and the most notable alumnus of the university is Morihiro Hosokawa, the 79th Prime Minister of Japan. The university is home to over 14,000 students and the campus is spread across 400 acres of land. Further, the faculty comprises of 1270 full-time and part-time academic staff members.
