Established in 1857 by George W. Minns, San Jose State University was previously known as Minns Evening Normal School in California. The university is one of the oldest institutes situated on the West Coast. In 1972, upon meeting criteria met by the board of trustees and the Coordinating Council for Higher Education, San Jose was awarded university status, and the name was then changed to California State University, San Jose. Later, in 1974, the California legislature changed the institute's name to San José State University.
