History, Affiliations and Rankings

Established in 1857 by George W. Minns, San Jose State University was previously known as Minns Evening Normal School in California. The university is one of the oldest institutes situated on the West Coast. In 1972, upon meeting criteria met by the board of trustees and the Coordinating Council for Higher Education, San Jose was awarded university status, and the name was then changed to California State University, San Jose. Later, in 1974, the California legislature changed the institute's name to San José State University. San Jose has academic affiliations with space-grant and athletic affiliations with NCAA Division I FBS. San Jose ranks #1001–1200th in World University Rankings 2022 by Times Higher Education and #22 in Regional Universities West by the US News & World Report 2022.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The main campus of San Jose State University can be divided into 2 parts, the main campus, and the south campus. The San Jose State University offers a safe and healthy campus by giving a Wellness Lounge for relaxation, and recreation. The campus has a 128,000-square-foot Spartan Recreation that offers activities like yoga, rafting, and many more. The campus also offers 450 student clubs ranging from cultural groups to Greek life. San Jose State is well dedicated to offering a safe campus atmosphere with a 53,000-square-foot student wellness centre. It has many traditions like Weeks of Welcome, Admitted Spartan Day, Homecoming, Earth Day, and many others. The Kings Library offers all resources needed for learning, printing labs, Wi-Fi access, study rooms, and many more amenities. The faculty members at SJSU collaborate academic excellence with industry and practical experience, preparing students for a practical approach. San Jose provides 143 undergraduate programs, 95 postgraduate programs, 11 distinct credential programs, and 38 certificates.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

San Jose State has been accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). San Jose from topping the national rankings to taking home the gold medal on the global athletic level, San Jose has reached the pinnacle of excellence often during its more than 160-year-old history. SJSU is frequently ranked as one of the top suppliers of undergraduate and graduate graduates to Silicon Valley technology corporations, and SJSU receives some of the greatest philanthropic donations in the CSU system. According to National Science Foundation survey statistics, San Jose State University's research and development expenditures reached $44.3 million in 2019, ranking it second among all 23 California State University (CSU) campuses and No. 209 among more than 900 colleges and universities globally. The notable alumni are Lou Henry Hoover — Former First Lady of the United States, Helder Antunes — Senior Director for Cisco; Chairman of OpenFog Consortium and Lee P. Brown — Former Police Commissioner of New York City; former mayor of Houston. San José State University is the leading feeder school for Apple Inc., which employs over 1,000 SJSU alumni, as of 2015. SJSU is ranked ninth on Facebook's list of best feeder schools.

San Jose State University values diversity in all its dimensions. The University has students from a wide range of backgrounds, including race, national origin, religion, beliefs, age, socioeconomic level, gender, sexual orientation, and handicap status. University's vibrant and diverse campus offers several opportunities for students to engage with their peers. The College has more than 33,000 student enrolments out of which about 27,600 are undergraduates and about 5,300 are postgraduates with about 2,100 faculty members on its premises. They have about 3,200 students hailing from all over the world on the campus. The male-to-female ratio is 52:48 at San Jose State University making it a fairly gender-balanced university.
