About the University

History, Affiliations and Rankings

The Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London, England, is the oldest conservatoire in the UK, With the support and ideas of French harpist and composer Nicolas Bochsa, the Royal Academy of Music was created in 1822 by John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland. In 1830, King George IV bestowed the academy with a royal charter. Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was a major contributor to the academy's foundation. Its affiliation is with ABRSM King's College London. The institution was in danger of closing in 1866, which contributed to the establishment of the Royal College of Music in nearby South Kensington. When William Sterndale Bennett, the academy's freshly appointed principal and a former student, assumed the role of board chairman and placed the school's finances and reputation on solid ground, the academy's history changed for the better. According to the QS World University Rankings, the Royal College of Music in London is the seventh-best performing arts university in the UK and Europe (2022)
