History, Affiliations and Rankings

The university’s first students sat in St Mark's College in Chelsea in 1840. St John's College, Battersea, welcomed its first students in 1841. In 1923, the two colleges merged to form 'Marjon.' The university exists because their forefathers saw a problem with poverty in Victorian London and decided to do something about it. They established colleges specifically to educate and lift young orphans from the workhouses out of poverty. In 1973, Marjon relocated to Plymouth. They were first affiliated with the University of Exeter in 1991, and in 2007 they were granted university college status, followed by legal confirmation of university title in 2013. In the most recent university guide, Plymouth Marjon University received yet another slew of outstanding results. Out of 130 UK universities, Marjon is ranked third for social inclusion, fourth for teaching quality, and eighth for student experience in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Plymouth Marjon University is situated on a green and spacious campus, with world-class facilities in a spectacular part of the world. From lecture rooms, library and IT facilities, to a state of the art sports centre, accommodation, student union bar, dining areas and shops, Marjon has everything a student needs. The University's sports centre facilities are modern, accessible, and spacious, and are open to both students and the general public. The university offers 47 undergraduate degrees, 41 postgraduate programs and a foundation course, out of which 75 are taught full time and 50 are part-time programs.

Accomplishments and Alumni

The university has been rated the number one university in England for “learning community” and second for “student voice”, in the National Student Survey. Personal Development Tutors at the university work with small groups of students to help them discover their strengths, gain confidence, and make the most of their university experience. They have ambitious goals, but the university is first and foremost a people-oriented institution that expects humanity and grace from all. Thousands of Marjon graduates are making a difference in the world with their skills, talent, and knowledge. Some of the notable names are Paul Potts, Welsh tenor, Ron Pickering, Coach and Bob Brunning, a British musician.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The university's student body is truly diverse, has welcomed students from over 60 countries over the years. It has the Marjon Student Union (MSU), which is a helpful, friendly group of dedicated individuals committed to making your university experience the best it can be. The IHRA statement on antisemitism is enthusiastically endorsed by Plymouth Marjon University. Their opposition to antisemitism is framed by their equally strong opposition to all forms of racism and related hate crimes. Plymouth Marjon University is committed to offering vocationally relevant degrees that result in employable graduates with skills that benefit the local economy, communities, and businesses.
