Re-established in 1949 as a result of an amalgamation of smaller learning institutes, Nagasaki University is a public Japanese university with an unmatched focus on research. In 1945, it was razed to the ground during the Second World War bombing on Nagasaki. Since then it has been miraculously rebuilt and now is considered one of the best universities in Japan. Both Times Higher Education Rankings and QS Rankings 2020 have placed Nagasaki University at 40th and 22nd spot respectively amongst the best universities in Japan. The university’s diverse repository of study programs are offered through nine specialised faculties/schools, seven highly regarded graduate schools and multiple centres of research. The faculties are fractionated into disciplines of engineering, humanities and social sciences, education, medicine, dentistry, pharmaceutical sciences, economics, environmental science and fisheries. It also houses dedicated centres such as Centre for Health and Community Medicine, Centre for Language Studies and Research Centre for Future of Fukushima. Currently, the university is home to nearly 9,000 students across undergraduate, graduate and research programs with close to 300 students hailing from countries worldwide. Its illustrious list of alumni include names such as Takashi Nagai, awarded radiologist and Osamu Shimomura, Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry. It has forged international partnerships with renowned universities such as University of Southern California, Michigan State University and the University of Edinburgh amongst others.
