History, Affiliations and Rankings
Mississippi College was founded in 1826 as Hampstead Academy and was chartered by the state legislature. The new school was renamed Mississippi Academy and began delivering education for boys and girls in January 1827, on five acres near Mount Salus in Central Mississippi. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has accredited Mississippi College to offer baccalaureate, master's, education specialist, and doctoral degrees. It is affiliated with the Mississippi Baptist Convention, is a private, co-educational, Christian university of liberal arts and sciences.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The main campus of Mississippi College in Clinton covers more than 80 acres. The Mississippi College School of Law is in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi. The ancient Provine Chapel, which opened in 1860 and is the oldest building on the Clinton campus, is one of Mississippi College's most notable architecture. Alumni Hall, which opened in 1926, has a gymnasium for intramural basketball games and a huge pool for students, faculty, and staff to enjoy water aerobics. Mississippi College offers more than 80 undergraduate majors, more than 50 graduate areas of study, three doctoral programs, a law school, and one of the state's finest Physician Assistant programs.
Accomplishments and Alumni
MC has received numerous awards and rankings for both the quality and the value of our academic programs. In recent years, about 73% of MC students who have applied to medical school have been accepted to exceed national averages. For the first time in 2007, MC had an equestrian team, with senior Meredith Guider of Utica ranked as the fourth-best collegiate rider in the US. Under President Lee Royce, Mississippi College witnessed consistent enrollment growth, a rebirth of campus infrastructure, and massive levels of gift-giving. The United States Water Fitness Association has awarded MC's aquatic program it's number one ranking among U.S. colleges for more than a decade. The college has a long list of achievements. Some of the notable alumni are Phil Bryant, Governor of Mississippi, Ted DiBiase, Jr., retired professional wrestler, most known with the WWE and J. Andrew Gipson, Mississippi House of Representatives member and attorney.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
With nearly 4,900 students, MC is the state's largest private university. There are a total of 3,242 undergraduate and 1,465 students. It has over 50 chartered student organisations ranging from academic societies to campus ministries, so there's something for everyone. The men's service clubs and women's social tribes are two of the best ways to get active in social life at MC. These organisations promote social interaction as well as community service and character development
