History, Affiliations and Rankings
The origins of Loughborough University may be traced back to a small technical institute founded in 1909. Originally, Loughborough University of Technology solely offered technical education. In 1996, the university was given its current name. There are currently 22 academic schools and departments, over 100 research groups, institutes, and centres, and over 35 professional services and teams at the institution. LU is accredited by the Universities UK, Wallace Group, Association of MBAs, European University Association (EUA), and Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). According to the QS World Rankings 2022, the university is ranked #231 and placed between 301 - 400 world's best universities as per Times Higher Education 2022.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The university's main campus is in Loughborough, Leicestershire. Academic departments, 17 halls of residence, the Students' Union, two gyms, gardens, and playing fields make up the Loughborough campus (formerly the estate of Burleigh Hall), which spans 438 acres. In London, the university also operates a postgraduate campus. For the facilities they provide, both campuses have received numerous accolades and rankings. Accountancy, Finance, Engineering, Sciences, Architecture, Business, Computer Science, Management, Mathematics, Languages, Sports, Economics, Arts, Social Sciences, Media, and Psychology are just a few of the undergraduate, doctorate, and postgraduate degrees available at Loughborough University.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Over 120 Loughborough athletes competed in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, representing eight countries in ten sports. Athletes from Loughborough earned 35 medals in total, including 13 bronze, 13 silver, and 9 gold. The Times and Sunday Times University Good University Guide recognised Loughborough University of the Year 2019. Loughborough University is the only university in the world to have earned the award twice. Loughborough is now ranked 5th in the Good University Guide. At the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2018, Loughborough was also named university of the year. The internationally recognised master's programme in renewable energy is run by the Center for Renewable Energy Systems Technology or CREST. Researchers in European politics and international affairs call the Department of Politics, History, and International Relations, or PHIR, home. Apart from this, Loughborough University has a significant alumni network. In 169 countries, there are more than 178,000 alumni including, Steve Backley (British Athlete), Sebastian Coe (Member of Parliament of the United Kingdom), Liam Heath (British Sprint Canoeist), Paula Radcliffe (Three-Time London Marathon Winner), Tobias Ellwood (Conservative MP).
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
There are around 17,000 students and 3,700 employees at the university. It is a part of UNITECH International, a well-known international academic network, and collaborates with a number of international institutions, including MIT, IIT Delhi, and Nanyang Technological University. Many financing agencies and sponsors, such as the Brunei High Commission, the Libyan Embassy, the Oman Cultural Attaché Office, and the Chevening Organization, have strong ties to it. The institution provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to improve their employability while also providing them with numerous excellent employment options.
