History, Affiliations and Rankings
Golden Gate University is a private, non-profit university in San Francisco, California that has been offering skill-based, practical education since 1901, which was the first year when degree-conferring programs began at the University. The University evolved out of the literary reading groups of the San Francisco Central YMCA and shares its YMCA roots with a number of other U.S. Universities, including Bentley University, Roosevelt University and more. It began in the early 1850s, by opening the first night school in San Francisco. In 1923, it went on to become YMCA Night School and YMCA Evening College before becoming the Golden Gate College and received the moniker of Golden Gate University in 1972. The University is affiliated with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The University is located in San Francisco, Seattle and Silicon Valley. The GGU San Francisco campus is located in the heart of the city's downtown financial district, and is easily accessible by public transportation. GGU libraries, legal clinics and centers, computer labs, student and alumni lounges and service offices are located here. Golden Gate University is primarily a post-graduate institution with its smaller undergraduate programs linked to its larger and professional schools. It offers more than 60 courses in fields like Law, Business, Taxation and Accounting. The University has five schools - School of Law, Edward S. Ageno School of Business, School of Accounting, Bruce F. Braden School of Taxation and the more recently established School of Undergraduate Studies. The average class size is 17 students.

Golden Gate launched the country’s first graduate program in Telecommunications Management and started one of the country’s first web-based learning programs. With a global alumni network of 68,000+ graduates, Golden Gate University is recognized as the #1 School for Adult Learners. Golden Gate University has a student population of 3300+ including, 1800+ graduate students and 580+ undergraduate students. The 300+ International students on the campus, who come from about 47 countries worldwide comprise approximately 17% of the total student body. 49% of the enrolments comprise female students, making it a fairly gender-balanced University.
