The M.Sc program, through course-work and thesis options, lets students strengthen their foundational education, prepare for technical careers in industry, or prepare for advanced study at the doctoral level. The department’s faculty work and teach in the areas of algorithms, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, computer and network security, database systems, data mining, distributed algorithms, distributed systems, information assurance, information retrieval, machine learning, natural language processing, networking, non-standard parallel computing, and parallel algorithms.

The primary mission of the MS degree program in Mathematics and Statistics is to prepare students for professional careers in disciplines which make use of the mathematical and statistical sciences. Our evening-only curriculum is intended for individuals who have strong backgrounds, but not necessarily baccalaureate degrees in mathematics. It is the only such program in the greater DC area. The program enrolled its first class in the fall semester of 2006 and has grown to a stable and continuing size of about 90 students. Each fall semester we enroll roughly 30-35 new students, and there is an admission window for spring semesters as well, with an average of about 5-7 new students.

The Master of Science in Microbiology & Immunology is a flexible program of study designed to help students achieve their individual educational goals and career objectives. The proximity of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology to the National Institutes of Health and other organizations provide our students a unique learning environment with rarely available insights into the national response to the emerging problems of infectious diseases. A broad range of course offerings from within the department and University allows the students to gain or enhance their background in microbiology, immunology, and various aspects of modern molecular genetics. Laboratory experience in specialized techniques is also available. The program is intended to enhance career advancement in teaching and industry or prepare a student for a career in research. Graduates of our program will be prepared to work in establishments that have a direct impact on infectious diseases in the United States and abroad

Housed within Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service, the Master of Arts in Asian Studies (MASIA) program provides students a unique combination of functional training and regional expertise. This degree equips students with the necessary skills to engage with private and public sector interests in Asia while solving global issues related to the region. MASIA at Georgetown is a terminal, 36-credit (12-course) program, where students have the opportunity to study core disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences as they relate to Asia. Students also pursue one or more thematic/geographic concentrations. A thesis option is available.

The Master of Science in Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary program with an emphasis in genomics, proteomics and systems biology. The Bioinformatics program is built upon the research strengths and bioinformatics infrastructure at the Protein Information Resource (PIR) and Georgetown University. It also uniquely located in the nation’s capital, home to numerous federal agencies (NIH, NCI, FDA, NIST) and 2,000 biotechnology companies. A major in Economics at Georgetown University requires completion of ten economics courses (including statistics and econometrics) and a calculus course, for a total of eleven (11) courses. Of the ten economics courses, at least five must be taken in the Economics Department at Georgetown

Georgetown's Department of Computer Science consists of twenty three full-time faculty working in the areas of algorithms, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, computer and network security, communication complexity, cryptography, database systems, data mining, distributed algorithms, distributed systems, human-computer interaction, information assurance, information retrieval, machine learning, natural language processing, networking, non-standard parallel computing, parallel algorithms, theory, and visual analytics. We are a small department, which provides both undergraduate and graduate students considerable opportunities for interaction with the faculty through independent study and in faculty research. The Master in Data Science for Public Policy at Georgetown University combines the historic strengths of the McCourt School's public policy analysis curriculum with the cutting-edge computational, mathematical, statistical methods training of the Georgetown Graduate Analytics program. The MDSPP trains students to apply data science methods to public policy questions? like economics and job creation, health and health care, and education? in new and innovative ways.

Accounting majors master the technical skills essential for success in business, consulting, government, and non-profits. They develop critical soft skills like teamwork, effective business communication, and strategic thinking. The curriculum includes core courses in financial and managerial accounting, and electives that focus on more advanced topics such as financial statement analysis, consolidation, partnership accounting, auditing, tax accounting, and governmental and international accounting. Accounting graduates pursue careers with a variety of organizations, including public accounting firms, not-for-profit and government agencies, corporations, investment banks, hedge funds, and private equity firms. The accounting major provides an excellent foundation for graduate study in law or economics.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a traditional four-year program. A highly regarded faculty provides students with a grounding in clinical skills; knowledge in the biological, physical, and social sciences; and nursing theory. Students have access to diverse health systems and community-based organizations around the Washington region and the O'Neill Family Foundation Clinical Simulation Center in St. Mary's Hall. Students are well prepared for the NCLEX-RN examination. Alumni of the BSN Program have gone on to diverse careers, prestigious graduate programs, and leadership roles in various sectors.

The Physics Department offers programs leading to a B.S. in Physics, an A.B. in Physics, or a minor in Physics. We also offer degrees in Biological Physics. Students planning to attend graduate school in physics or engineering or intending to work as a physicist usually pursue a B.S. degree. Students interested in careers in medicine, law, finance, or other areas will benefit from any of the programs, but they may find that the A.B. (or the minor) allows more time to pursue other degrees or interests. The first 5 courses taken for the B.S. and the A.B. are the same, so it is not necessary to decide between the two degrees until at least the end of the 2nd year.

The Bachelor of Science in Human Science is a four-year program that provides undergraduate students with a strong scientific background in the context of human health. Faculty members create dynamic classroom-based and experiential learning opportunities and act as research mentors in various types of scientific inquiry. Students in the program have access to the Discovery Center research laboratory and learn how to communicate their findings through presentation and, sometimes, publication.

Classics Major With A Concentration In Classical Languages Students must complete a minimum of eleven courses, including at least six courses in either Greek or Latin at the intermediate level (100) or above; one course in Classical Studies at the introductory level (100), and one additional course in Classical Studies; three elective courses. Classics Major With A Concentration In Classical Studies The concentration in Classical Studies requires eleven courses, including one or two courses in Latin or Greek; two courses in Classical Studies at the introductory level (100); two courses in Classical Studies at the advanced level (200); one seminar at the 300-level or above; and four or five electives in Classical Studies, Greek, or Latin. Classics Major With A Concentration In Hellenic Studies Students must complete a minimum of eleven courses, including seven courses in modern Greek or ancient Greek; at least two courses of the seven must be in GREE (011/111/211/301) and another two must be in CLSG (In order to be counted, CLSG 001 must be followed by CLSG 002; GREE 011, if counted, must be followed by GREE 012). Four additional courses in Greek language, history or culture in either CLSG, CLSS, or GREE must be completed.

The Master of Science in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Georgetown University is a basic science program that infuses core concepts of biochemistry and molecular biology as applied to biomedical sciences and biotechnology, providing students with a rigorous and challenging curriculum. Graduates from the program excel in various career paths with government agencies, academic institutions, research laboratories, and biotechnology companies. Alumni have also continued their education by pursuing doctoral, medical, and law degrees, using the skills and training at Georgetown University to propel their future academic and research careers. Core concepts and skills are taught through required core courses, advanced electives, special topics courses, and a 4 credit internship. At least 30 graduate credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater are required for the M.S. degree. Our courses expose students to advanced methods in biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology, laboratory research, and literature-based research and include a significant number of “hands-on” lab-based courses that develop research expertise. Our program offers a well-organized, intensive capstone internship program that culminates in students presenting their research at tri-annual poster presentation sessions. The internships are done with research mentors in various GUMC laboratories on-campus, or off-campus in government agencies such as NIH and FDA or biotechnology companies.

The Chemistry department offers two separate undergraduate majors – a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.S. in Biochemistry. The department also offers a minor in Chemistry. In addition to coursework in each of the fundamental areas of Chemistry/Biochemistry, our majors have abundant opportunities to participate in undergraduate research. Undergraduates are encouraged to get involved in research as early as possible via enrolling in research courses, the GU Research Opportunities Program (GUROP) or even on a volunteer basis. For those students who wish to make a more serious multi-term commitment to undergraduate research, our Honors program culminates in a senior thesis. The Chemistry major is fully accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS). Students who pursue a B.S. Chemistry degree are well-prepared for graduate study in Chemistry or related scientific fields. With the addition of Introductory Biology, the Chemistry curriculum meets all of the necessary prerequisites for Medical School admissions. The B.S. Biochemistry degree provides rigorous training suitable for graduate study in Biochemistry or basic medical sciences and meets all the Medical School admissions requirements. It is particularly well suited for students aspiring to MD-PhD programs. Recent graduates have also been successful at securing positions in industry, teaching or other science-related fields upon graduation, or have gone on to law or business schools.

The Physics Department offers programs leading to a B.S. or an A.B. in Biological Physics. Students seeking to major in Sociology with a grade of C+ or better in the introductory course will normally be accepted as majors in the department. At its discretion, the department may provisionally admit a student who fails to meet this requirement, and then review its decision after the student completes the required theory (SOCI 202) and research methods (SOCI 201) classes. The Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUGS) is the faculty advisor for all department majors. Prospective majors must arrange for an interview with the DUGS. We strongly recommend that students take Introduction to Sociology before enrolling in other sociology courses. Introduction to Sociology is listed as a prerequisite for some upper division courses. Please consult the course descriptions. Students majoring in Sociology are required to take ten courses in the department: six required courses, two Core Topic Lectures, and two Advanced Seminars. The six required courses are as follows: Introduction to Sociology, Methods of Social Research, Sociological Theory, Statistics for Social Research, and a two-part Senior Seminar: Data Collection/Analysis and Analysis & Writing. Sociological Theory, Methods of Social Research, and Social Statistics should be taken during the junior year. In the Methods course students write a proposal for the research that will be the basis for their senior thesis, which is completed in the Senior Seminar in the senior year. Majors should consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies about studying abroad or any unusual plans for completing the requirements.

A major in Theater & Performance Studies consists of courses that combine critical and creative inquiry and is designed for students interested in not only developing skills in theater and performance but in an interdisciplinary exploration of how these art forms matter in the world. This distinctive degree program engages with theater and performance as it intersects with social justice, cultural politics, criticism, American and world cultures, arts management, education, and more. The TPST Program offers studio/seminar courses in acting, directing, playwriting, design, technical theatre, and stage management, as well as coursework and production opportunities that emphasize adaptation and performance; devising and developing new work; cross-cultural performance and world theatre history; performance and politics; community-based performance; arts management; ensemble techniques; musical and cabaret performance; interdisciplinary learning about culture, race, gender, and identity; and a variety of special topics that offer diverse opportunities for undergraduate research.

A major in Art, with a concentration in Drawing/Printmaking, Painting, Sculpture, or Photography/Graphic Design and New Media, consists of eleven courses: ten courses in the studio discipline and one course in art history. An Art major’s specific course requirements depend on the area of concentration. Art majors have the option of taking a second art history course in place of one of their studio art electives, with permission of the department. All Art majors are required to take the Senior Seminar (ARTS 499) course in the fall semester of senior year and to exhibit a selection of their work in the Senior Majors Exhibition the following Spring. The seminar enables majors to articulate the concepts in their art and to organize a strong portfolio within their area of concentration. Participation in the Senior Majors Exhibition teaches students to present their work effectively to the Georgetown community and a wider public.

Georgetown’s Global Health Law LL.M. programs train lawyers to apply their specialized legal skills to improve population health in the United States and globally. The innovative full- or part-time courses of study explore the intersections of health and law, including global health governance, infectious diseases and the law, non-communicable diseases and the law, health and human rights, trade law and health, bioethics, food and drug law, and access to health care.

The Department of Psychology offers undergraduate students both a major (31 credits) and a minor (18 credits). Both are designed to expose students to the range of perspectives that make up modern academic psychology: historical and theoretical perspectives; psychological development; and social, cultural, clinical, cognitive, and biological approaches. A complete statement of the program’s learning goals can be found in the Undergraduate Handbook. Undergraduate courses are taught by faculty accomplished in both theoretical and empirical research. Upper-level seminars are also offered by senior graduate students. Students receive a strong foundation in research methods for the social sciences while enjoying the flexibility to choose from two different areas of study. The Department’s Honors Program provides qualified students intensive, hands-on research experience working closely with faculty mentors. All undergraduates are encouraged to seek research assistantships with faculty members whose research interests them. Our undergraduate research assistants are currently working in faculty labs on a variety of projects, including infant learning from screen media, cultural studies of emotion, and procedural justice with juvenile offenders. Classroom learning is augmented by stimulating extracurricular involvement. Undergraduate psychology majors and minors are actively involved in the Department which organizes social and informational activities for students throughout the academic year. The Psychology Department also hosts a Chapter of Psi Chi, the National Psychology Honor Society. Psi Chi organizes community service and internship opportunities for members while maintaining a strong emphasis on academic scholarship.
