Established in 1755, First Moscow State Medical University was previously known as the Imperial Moscow University, which further changed its name to Moscow State University in 1917. University named Ivan Sechenov, a research graduate of Moscow Imperial, who was also the "father of Russian physiology." The university became independent in 1930 and gained full university status in 2010. The institution recently celebrated its 260th anniversary in 2018. The First Moscow State Medical University has active affiliations with the international professional organizations, unions, associations World Health Organization, International Association of Universities, Eurasian Association of Universities, World Federation for Medical Education, Association of University Programs for Population Health Management, European Health Management Association and others. First Moscow State Medical University has a subject ranking of #451 – 500 in QS World Ranking, ranks #115 in BRICS Ranking, and ranks #154 in EECA University Rankings.

The First Moscow State Medical University has been Accredited and Recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Ministry of Education, Azerbaijan. The notable alumni of the institute are Pyotr Gannushkin, a Russian psychiatrist that developed one of the first theories of psychopathy's (today known as personality disorders), Nikolay Pirogov, Russian scientist, medical doctor, inventor, pedagogue, and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1847), considered to be the founder of field surgery and was one of the first surgeons in Europe to use ether as an anesthetic and Ivan Sechenov, Russian neurophysiologist; honorary member of Russian Academy of Sciences; Moscow Medical Academy, and Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry were named after him.

First Moscow State Medical University values diversity in all its dimensions. The College has more than 19,000 student enrolments out of which about 3,500 are international students. There are students from around 90 countries all over the world at the university. The largest number of international students are from Malaysia, China, Azerbaijan, Iran, India, Namibia, South Africa, and others. The male to female ratio is 50:50 at First Moscow State Medical University making it a fairly gender-balanced university.
