Cape Breton University started its journey as Xavier Junior College (XJC, later Xavier College), founded in 1951 in Canada under St. Francis Xavier University. On June 28, 1974, the College of Cape Breton (CCB) was founded, uniting the Sydney Campus of St. Francis Xavier (Xavier College) and NSEIT into a single post-secondary institution governed by an autonomous Board of Governors. When CCB was given university status in June 1982, it became the University College of Cape Breton (UCCB), the first university college of its kind in Canada. The University has academic affiliations from the Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU), Universities Canada (UC), Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan), and the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE). In terms of faculty-student contact and service-learning, the programmes that are offered by this university have outperformed national benchmarks in a variety of subjects. They are ranked #68 in the country ranking and #2369 worldwide by UniRank.

Cape Breton University is located in the suburbs of Sydney, Nova Scotia, a small city with a population of 50,000 - 249,999 students. It provides magnificent undergraduate and graduate learning opportunities that explore arts, cultures, health, economies, sciences, and business. Accomplishments and Alumni 

Cape Breton University received a gold medal in the category of Best Indigenous Relations Initiative and a silver medal in the category of Best Use of Social Media. For the Learning the L'nu Way Experience, CBU received a Gold Medal in the Best Indigenous Relations Initiative category. This learning experience presented CBU employees and faculty with an opportunity for professional development that addressed some of the recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada in relation to post-secondary education and higher education institutions. The university is globally renowned for offering students an exchange program that allows students to learn about a different curriculum along with professionals. The university also offers scholarship programs to students with a good record of academic performance and co-curricular activities. Additionally, the university has a diverse list of notable alumni members. Some of the names include Nolan Crouse (Mayor of St. Alberta), Jason Massie (Soccer player in League player, Ontario).

Cape Breton University (CBU) is home to almost 5,500 students from more than 55 nations. It is surrounded by pristine natural beauty, rich culture, and hospitable communities. Cape Breton University has a long history of attracting international students and collaborating with post-secondary universities abroad. They have approximately 3,500 international students. The university has to offer, from the Boardmore Playhouse to the Art Gallery, to the Beaton Institute. CBU is an exciting hub for cultural activity, research and collaboration.
