Ca' Foscari University of Venice was Italy’’s first institute of higher education in the field of commerce. The university is named after the Venetian Gothic Palace of Ca’ Foscari where it was originally constructed in 1868. The institute’s pivotal focus was to equip and prepare the staff on commercial diplomacy for overseas service. It was also established as a training college offering educational courses in commerce disciplines to secondary school teachers and foreign language courses are also provided at the university. The institute attained the status of a university in 1968 and it was renamed as Università Degli Studi di Venezia. In the same year, the university formed two faculties of Individual Chemistry and Philosophy and Letters. The university comprises of 8 departments namely Economics, Humanities, Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies, Molecular Science and Nanosystems etc. Home to a total of 22,000 students, the university is amongst the top-ranked Italian academic institutions and has been ranked at 5th position in a list of 89 universities. In 2018, it was referred to as the third-best public university in Italy for its quality research studies as per reports by ANVUR (The National Agency for the Evaluation of University Research Systems). The most prominent alumni from Ca' Foscari University include Renzo Rosso (Founder of the Clothing brand Diesel), Paolo Costa (Economist and Politician) and Flaminio Piccoli (Politician).
