The Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences offers a one-year, eight-course program of study leading to the Master of Arts in Psychology that provides the flexibility to explore a variety of areas in psychology, building on a common foundation of scientific methodologies. Particular strengths of the program include cognition, neuroscience, developmental science, and clinical psychology. Most graduate-level courses offered by the department are open to MA students, and all faculty are available for academic supervision. Faculty are actively engaged in psychological research, which provides ample opportunity for students to participate in ongoing projects. The program satisfies the interests of those who wish to undertake a rigorous course of study that leads to the master’s degree. The program is appropriate both for students with a limited background in psychology and those who hold an undergraduate degree in the field. Some students use the program as a means to clarify their interest in professional psychology; others use it as a first step toward a doctoral program. Many of our graduates have applied their advanced training in psychology to work in government and industry as researchers, mental health workers, administrators, and managers. Others have continued with doctoral studies in psychology or related fields. The program is not intended to qualify students for the independent practice of professional psychology. Although we do not require that applicants have an undergraduate major in psychology, applicants are required to have taken some coursework in psychology. We recommend an introductory course, a course in research methods in psychology, a course in statistics, and at least two content courses.

The Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics (MSADA) program provides students with solid knowledge of the foundations of data analytics and emphasizes the presentation and discussion of the latest industry tools and approaches within an academically rigorous framework. The curriculum provides a thorough immersion in concepts and techniques for organizing, cleaning, analyzing, and representing/visualizing large amounts of data. Students will be exposed to various database systems (e.g. Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL), data mining tools (e.g. Weka), data visualization tools and packages (e.g. Tableau, ggplot2, Plotly, Matplotlib, Seaborn), Python packages (e.g. NumPy, pandas, SciPy, SciKit, TensorFlow, PySpark), R packages (e.g. Google Analytics, tm, Shiny, Word Cloud, googleVis), and cloud services such as Amazon AWS (S3, EC2, EMR), Google Cloud (Cloud Storage, Compute Engine), and Mass Open Cloud. The knowledge of analytics tools combined with understanding of data mining and machine learning approaches will enable students to critically analyze real-world problems and understand the possibilities and limitations of analytics applications. Students who complete the master’s degree in Applied Data Analytics will be able to demonstrate: Knowledge of the foundations of applied probability and statistics and their relevance in day-to-day data analysis. Comprehension of computing concepts and applications requirements involving massive computing needs and data storage. The ability to apply various data visualization techniques using real-world data sets and analyze the graphs and charts. Understanding of web analytics and metrics, procuring and processing unstructured text/data, and the ability to investigate hidden patterns. Knowledge-discovery skills using data mining techniques and tools over large amounts of data. The ability to implement machine learning algorithms and their pertinence in real-world applications. Comprehensive knowledge of data analytics techniques, skills, and critical thinking, and an understanding of the possibilities and limitations of their applications.

Artificial Intelligence, AI, is an area of study that explores how to create computer programs that learn to make decisions, reason about data, and communicate with humans. In the MS in AI degree program, students learn to apply creative thinking, algorithmic design, and coding skills to build modern AI systems. Students will gain deep technical training and expertise in our focus areas of machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. The program prepares students to work as Artificial Intelligence Engineers in information technology companies or pursue a PhD degree in computer science. The 8-course MS in AI program is geared toward students with a computer science undergraduate degree, but we also welcome those with equivalent training and experience, as well as students with gaps in their computing background but strong academic records overall. While not required, MS in AI candidates may complete a master’s project or thesis. Projects are carried out with the approval of, and under the supervision of, a faculty member. The MA in Economics is a terminal master’s program that equips its graduates with the advanced knowledge and quantitative skills required for an economic analyst in the business world, the consulting industry, a central bank or government. The training provides a thorough understanding of fundamental economic principles, application of mathematical methods and modeling, and the use of computer software for large-scale data analysis. It is accomplished through the economics core (four courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, and econometrics) and four elective courses. These courses are designed exclusively for master’s students, distinct from our PhD and undergraduate offerings. The elective courses develop quantitative skills and specialized knowledge in nearly all major areas of economics and are taught largely by our own research faculty. International Relations is a major offered by the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies to students enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences. As a mechanical engineering student, you will design and build products, machines, and research prototypes in the Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC), characterize your creations in the shared facilities of the Photonics Center, turn your ideas into reality at the BUild Lab (Innovate@BU), and collaborate with students in the Questrom School of Business to understand how practicing engineers thrive in industry. Most of the engineering science courses come from the two major stems of mechanical engineering: (1) energy and fluids, and (2) structures and motion in mechanical systems. During their sophomore and junior years, students take four first-level courses from the structures/motion stem (including two courses in engineering mechanics, mechanics of materials, and materials science) and three first-level courses from the energy/fluids stem (including fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer). In their senior year, students take a systems-level instrumentation course and capstone design experience, and have the opportunity to broaden and deepen their technical background through four advanced elective courses. Students in the mechanical engineering program gain experience in laboratory settings through experiments associated with all of their natural science courses (in the freshman and sophomore years) and with most of their engineering science courses (in their sophomore and junior years). Laboratory experience culminates in the senior year with an intensive mechanical measurements and instrumentation course.

Our Master of Fine Arts in Production Management program provides developing theatre professionals with the opportunity to cultivate their artistic identities while refining and enhancing their craft. The program aims to foster the production manager as theatre artist: a collaborator and facilitator within the team; an innovator of the design and production process; and an orchestrator of a rehearsal and production environment that encourages creative exploration. The Production Management program challenges students to push boundaries and redefine the traditional role of the Production Manager. Individualized programs of study vary greatly depending on the level of preparation each graduate student brings to his or her first year of training, and there exists no model that is truly representative. In general, students in the Production Management program can expect their training regimen to mix both ongoing studio classes with design, production, and management classes that alternate short-term exercises with long-term projects. Production Management candidates will participate in both hands-on assignments and in-class instruction designed to enhance and broaden their skill sets. The University’s new Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre and College of Fine Arts Production Center is a state-of-the-art multi-functional studio theatre and production facility with a full complement of support spaces and design labs for teaching and producing student theatre. This new complex will allow the School of Theatre to be in close proximity to other programs in theatre and opera performance. Recognizing that the worlds of law and business have become increasingly interdependent and complex, the School of Law (LAW) and Questrom School of Business at Boston University offer a formal dual degree program in Law & Management. Because of the many areas of focus shared by the two schools, students can complete the JD/MBA dual degree program in an accelerated three-year track, although the traditional four-year track is also an option.

Computer engineering is one of two BS programs offered by the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. Where would we be without computers? Modern computers are complex systems that may consist of single machines or many interconnected computers linked by a network. Computers are playing an increasingly active role in our lives; they are the “brains” inside of telephone and communications systems, process control and manufacturing automation systems, information management systems, large household appliances, automobiles, transportation systems, and medical instrumentation—not to mention the internet. Behind all of these devices—and the explosive growth of our technological society—is computer engineering. As a computer engineer, you will learn to engineer hardware, software, and computer networks. As a computer engineering student, you will begin by building a strong foundation in the basics—physical sciences, mathematics, and computer science—all of which are necessary for a successful understanding of engineering. After establishing a foundation, you will enhance your understanding of the theory and application of computer engineering through courses designed to help you acquire specific techniques and skills in subject areas such as logic design, computer organization, operating systems, software design, and algorithms. You will also enroll in technical electives to help you gain a broader understanding of the subfields of computer engineering, such as VLSI, networking, and software design. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to explore areas of Cybersecurity and the Internet of Things through a sequence of available courses. During the senior year, you will join electrical engineering students in a year-long, department-wide capstone design project that draws upon all of the knowledge and skills that you will have learned in your previous years of study. Structured to resemble a real engineering company, the capstone project class will require you to design a product to meet customer needs and specifications. Design teams are responsible for product conception, development, testing, and construction, as well as budget management, oral presentations, and documentation.

The Master of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design provides a sequenced studio approach to advanced design thinking and problem-solving for visual communication, preparing students to thrive in a dynamic professional environment. A solution-based practice framed by key principles defines the core graphic design studios. During the first year of study, students are challenged to articulate a design perspective and method through studio projects emphasizing form and communication, authorship, audience, and medium. The major includes all Wheelock College of Education & Human Development pedagogy courses and practicum experience necessary for high school teaching licensure. Advisors in both the CAS Mathematics & Statistics Department and the Wheelock Mathematics Education Department must be consulted, as the scheduling of course programs requires careful planning. Learning Outcomes Students graduating with a joint major in Mathematics & Mathematics Education will: Demonstrate a mature understanding of single and multivariable calculus up through and including differential equations and of linear algebra. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the concept of mathematical proof and be able to present a rigorous proof of basic theorems. Demonstrate depth of understanding of core areas of mathematics that are particularly relevant to middle and high school teachers. Fulfill requirements for licensure of middle/high school teachers as dictated by the state of Massachusetts and pass the MTEL exam for Massachusetts teaching license.

You'll complete the first three years of the Medical School curriculum, then spend your fourth year fully integrated at Questrom within the Health Sector MBA program. During this fourth year, you'll take 39 credit hours of courses, focusing on core management classes. Multiple aspects of the sector will be addressed, including health care delivery, the life sciences industry, and health information technology. In your fifth year, you'll complete their remaining medical courses and seven management course credits at Questrom. The Health Sector MBA is awarded by Questrom and the MD degree is awarded by Boston University School of Medicine. A key aspect of the Health Sector MBA+ MD joint degree program is the internship requirement. All students who wish to complete this joint degree are required to do a 400-hour field placement in a health sector organization. The Bachelor of Arts in Music is for students to who desire a liberal arts education in music without a strict focus in performance. Students in the BA can pursue a general route as well as pivot toward two concentrations, as follows: BA in Music (General): Offers breadth and depth in a liberal arts music degree and provides students with a large selection of courses within the major and the most flexibility of all the routes in choosing music electives. The General BA route contains sufficient elective credits to be used for those students seeking Music Education licensure. BA in Music with concentration in Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Provides students the opportunity to explore the large-scale relationships between culture, politics, and musical repertories of the Western and non-Western world, from the past to the present. Faculty expertise runs the gamut from the Middle Ages to popular music, from Indonesia to Japan, Africa, and the Americas, and from manuscript studies to oral traditions and technology. BA in Music with concentration in Music Theory: Provides students the opportunity to explore the inner workings of music from all styles and periods in depth, utilizing theoretical, analytical, historical, and cultural perspectives. Since all three routes have a common first year, BA Music students will normally choose a concentration, if they wish, by the sophomore or junior year. The emphasis of the MS in Bioinformatics program is preparation for careers that involve using bioinformatics in research or in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries. In order to be admitted, students need at least a bachelor’s degree in a field related to bioinformatics. Typically, students enrolling in the MS program have strength in either the computational area or in biochemistry/molecular biology, but not both. Learning Outcomes Students graduating with an MS in Bioinformatics are expected to: Demonstrate mastery of the core concepts of Bioinformatics, including computational biology, database design and implementation, and probability and statistics. Demonstrate the ability to apply skills in a professional environment via an industrial or academic internship in Bioinformatics. Be able to effectively communicate scientific information in written and oral form.
