Autonomous University of Barcelona, officially known as Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Catalan and Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona in Spanish, was established in 1968 in Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain. The establishment of the university had delayed due to the Spanish First Civil War and cruel dictatorship under Francisco Franco, but Autonomous University of Barcelona was officially created by legislative decree on June 6, 1968. In the same year, major faculties like the Faculty of Letters, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Economical Sciences were added in the following months. As the dictatorship ended in 1976, the university decided to follow the independent, democratic model and declared a Bellaterra Manifesto based on the model. The period of 1986-1995 saw the major administrative, curriculum and faculties reforms. Today, there are 13 schools and faculties in Autonomous University of Barcelona in many disciplines. It offers 80 undergraduate programs, 315 postgraduate and 68 doctoral programs in Business Management and Administration, Economics, Primary Education, Social Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Health Sciences, Mathematics, Tourism and many more subjects. Not just this, it also offers online and part-time courses and foundation courses for all students. Autonomous University of Barcelona also has 351 research groups, 57 departments and 68 research institutes and centers which encourage students to undertake a research study based on their interest under guidance. Today, Autonomous University of Barcelona has a campus situated n Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain which is about 20 km (12 mi) away from the centre of Barcelona. The university campus is accessible by air (flights to Barcelona, Girona, or Reus), by train (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat, Renfe), and coach (SARBUS). Autonomous University of Barcelona has the state-of-the-art facilities including housing options, parking, health and medical facilities, sports and recreational activities, shopping, transportation, campus security police, and franchise of cafeteria and bars, etc. There are around 43,700 students enrolled in the university with the presence of academic staff of 3,800 members. According to the QS and THE ranking, Autonomous University of Barcelona is ranked #176 and #157 in 2019.
