TOEFL Daily Speaking: Which way is more effective for student projects: Working alone or collaborating in groups?

Ques. Some teachers encourage their students to work alone on projects and compete with each other. Other teachers encourage them to collaborate and work in groups. Which approach do you think is better?

Brainstorming ideas:

Reasons for supporting teachers that encourage collaboration and working groups:

cta
  • It encourages a sense of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Allows students to share diverse perspectives and ideas.
  • Fosters communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Students get to learn to put their thoughts out, listen to others and resolve conflicts.

Ans. I believe that teachers encouraging students to collaborate and work in groups is a better approach. Collaborative learning develops a sense of teamwork and cooperation, which are essential skills in both academic and professional settings. Working in groups allows students to share their diverse perspectives and ideas, leading to more creative and comprehensive solutions. For example, when I was in school, we had a science project and the project was divided among five students.

Some excelled at research, while others focused on assembling and presenting the final project. Moreover, group projects help students in fostering communication and interpersonal skills. By interacting with their friends, students get to learn to put their thoughts out, listen to others and resolve conflicts that might arise. These experiences are important as they prepare for future careers where teamwork is often crucial. In contrast, working alone can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation and excessive competition, hindering both learning and personal growth. Therefore, I strongly support teachers who encourage group work and collaboration among students.
