Professor: Today we’re going to talk about the debate between economic growth and protecting the environment. Economic growth creates new jobs and gives people money they can use to improve their lives. On the other hand, if we protect the environment it can be enjoyed both by ourselves and future generations. If you had to choose between prioritizing economic growth or protecting the environment, which one would you choose? Why?
Ans: I believe that right now, as a society, safeguarding the environment should be our top priority. We won’t be able to enjoy much of the future if there isn’t one. The scale on which we are currently functioning is undoubtedly causing unprecedented environmental damage, and who knows what awaits us if we continue on our path to destroy the world. The paradigm shift caused by our own capitalistic and greedy mindset has undoubtedly created new career opportunities, but it has also left a significant dent in our ecosphere. So much so that the impacts of global warming are now very obvious. For example, it rains during seasons when it shouldn’t, the planet’s temperature is at an all-time high, and our priceless glaciers and ice bodies are melting at an unprecedented rate. As a result, we must clearly prefer saving our world over destroying it for our own avarice.
